EFG?
Is the EFG here:

Still applicable now-a-days or is there a better way, or is it even necessary?

I would say that a firewall is definitely necessary if you connect to the internet.
I have found that the EFG works well, and should be suitable for your typical user.
If you want to do more advanced things, you could write it yourself, or use a GUI:

I don't think I need to do more advanced things. I just want to make sure my server out in the internet is safe. I'll be using it as a webserver, maybe email server, and some other things that a server can do.
It'll be all command line, but as the EFG hasn't been updated since 2005, I didn't know if it was still applicable. If it is, then it's a testament to the reliability of Slackware.

I like using the EFG combined with the basic hardware firewall on my router. Meets my needs.

Actually, it was updated recently, maybe with 14.0 because iptables options changed and the old EFG produced lots of errors.
