Try this:
Run 'xorgsetup' then the nvidia installer again.

I think the problem could be with the /dev/nvidia0 node as it gives an error:
NVRM: failed to map register
NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x10:032:1343)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter (0) failed

with the cat /dev/nvidia0 command
not too sure as the meaning of these errors but the permission on the nvidia0 node
is correct
any ideas?

Just as an extra thought, isn't there a kernel option to allow the loading of 3rd party modules? I'm not anywhere near a Linux box, and I can't download anything (big) from this computer, so I can't be sure. Perhaps it's the kernel, not the driver.

hi vonst thanks for the tip, I had tried to take a look into the kernel to see if there were any options but could not find any apart from the nvidia riva support but it conflicts with the nvidia module so I left it out. apart from that I have not seen any other option in the 2.4 kernel.
