(EE) Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device on startx with Slackware 13.1

Hello Everyone,

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.

I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -
ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

The culprit I think is that there are 2 VGA controllers, using command
# lspci -nn , shows:

Please anyone, I'm really needing a solution, help, guidelines and any suggestions to get this to work.

GrapefruiTgirl 08-24-2010 06:00 AM

Until someone with a really good grip on this pops in, here's a couple suggestions:

1) Try changing the driver to "nouveau" instead of nvidia, just as a test. My suspicion is that the in-kernel nouveau driver is stealing and registering with the video card before your 'nvidia' driver is getting activated, leading to a fight over the video card.

2) Or, blacklist the nouveau driver by editing your /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf file, and adding a line like so:
Code:

blacklist nouveau
and reboot; which should keep nouveau driver away and let nvidia driver do its job.

In combination with either my suggestion #1 OR #2, if X still fails to start, try temporarily removing (renaming) your xorg.conf file and see if X auto-configures itself once the driver is sorted out.

Also (especially failing the above suggestions), please tell us, is this a stock slackware kernel, or a custom built kernel of your own design?

EDIT: Also, please show us the output from:
Code:

lsmod
while the problem is occurring, if it does not get fixed with the above suggestion(s).

There are several LQ members who have a really good grip on this nvidia situation of late, who may tell you directly exactly what the problem is when they read your post; as for me, I've not used a stock kernel with my Slackware for a long time, and never have this problem, so I may be slightly off target here or have missed a detail.

Good luck meanwhile!
Sasha

Is this one of those machines with Optimus (http://www.nvidia.com/object/optimus_technology.html )?

If so, take a look at this: http://nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=153321

Hrmph..

Adam, thanks for providing that link(s).. :scratch: 'Interesting' and 'crap' is all I have to say for now; I hope the OP reports some good news.

Adam

Yes it is NVIDIA OPTIMUS technology, i'll take a look at the links

much appreciated for the immediate replies

0++ 08-24-2010 07:59 AM

aye yi yi that sux, quelle dommage to the max nvidia, i just checked that link, to think i went out to buy a laptop that specifically had an nvidia card in it and not an ATI, because of ill-repute of ati support on linux drivers, and this is what I get :S

however before I socked in slackware earlier I did try one of them other full ready made desktop distros both ubuntu and mint just to see how it would look, it loaded nouveau drivers and could do some of the compiz effects, but would crash on the 3d cube/desktop, but could easily do all the wobbly popping windows, so it has some degree of 3d acceleration, maybe I could go for that (even though noticeably it seems to eat lots of resources unless it was just the ubuntu/mint distro really doing that) while waiting for nvidia to support there optimus technology in linux.

any suggestion on how to now accomplish 3d acceleration with nouveau on this 3d card geforce 310M on slackware 13.1 ??

adamk75 08-24-2010 08:16 AM

I'm not in front of a slackware 13.1 machine at the moment, so I don't know if the kernel is new enough. At the very least, though, you will need to recompile Mesa to enable gallium/nouveau support.

However, are you sure you were using the nvidia GPU in those other distributions? To my knowledge, Ubuntu does not enable 3D acceleration via nouveau for nvidia cards yet (Fedora 13 was the first distribution to do so, I believe). It looks like you are using the Intel GPU by default, and it supports 3D acceleration. The drivers are more than capable of running compiz and KDE desktop effects, which is what I would assume you were using under Ubuntu and Mint.

@adam

friend, I appreciate very much your prompt replies.

yes, I'm using stock slackware kernel - 2.6.33.4 SMP

I just briefly installed ubuntu/mint and those did not linger long in my laptop, so your right I cant really be sure that they were running nouvea
drivers, but if memory served right but could be very wrong lsmod yeilded nv or nouveau. Only way for me to find out is to wipe my current drive :( and reinstall ubuntu/mint and find out, as much as possible i'd rather not though. =(

in anycase I need some degree of 3d acceleration if nvidia doesnt support it tough luck for now truely, but say adam how should I go about it try that gallium/nouveau support or just waste my nvidia card and use intel graphics support? and how could i manage that from the current standpoint?

(from what i've read around the internet gallium is very much in experimental stage, with no degree of stability atm the developers dont even support gallium)

adamk75 08-24-2010 08:37 AM

gallium is the only way tot get 3D support via nouveau. I can not comment on the stability (or functionality) of the nouveau driver, but the there is nothing inherently unstable/experimental about gallium any more.

Before you attempted to install the nvidia drivers, did X even start for you in Slackware?

@adam

before installing nvidia drivers yes X starts fine even in 1366x768 resolution the only time X borks for me is when i put or use autogeneration of a xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 ofcourse theres none such 3d acceleration of any kind but yes i get X to start with my DE and can even play videos just fine in Slackware GUI mode.

Theres a sample vesa xorg.conf in /etc/X11 that works but i dont use it and have renamed it and have left it unedited.

adamk75 08-24-2010 08:49 AM

What makes you say there was no 3D acceleration? Uninstall the drivers, remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and restart X. Then attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and show us the output of 'glxinfo'.

Adam

@adam

well what I meant was it would not do any eye-candy like wobbly windows and such. I'm not actually looking for running compiz 3d effects, but thats cool too, my real need for reasons would be because I tried running some graphics intensive windows apps in wine and vmware virtualization and it just wont do without 3d acceleration, but I'm just basing it at a safe guess that if any of the compiz effects work then I can pretty much surmise I will have the 3d function that I need. So thats what I meant by no 3d acceleration.

ok im going to uninstall drivers and report the outputs when i'm done.

ok adam I've uninstalled the nvidia driver/kernel and have restarted X,
