Question Editing Path and LD_LIBRARY_PATH

I'm still trying to get KDE to work in X, but I get the error KDEINIT not found. I know that it loads but I don't know how to edit PATH to refect the directories that KDE is in without totally deleting my other PATH perameters. It also tells me to add KDE's library installation directory to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH, I have no idea what this is. Any help would be appreciated. I'm using Slackware 9.1.

How did you install KDE? Did you use Slackware package management tools or just extracted files from a tarball?

KDEINIT and LD_LIBRARY_PATH are environment vars, set by the shell and used by all programs executed. Setting environment vars is simple (it is usually just a matter of editing configuration files), but a clean installation of KDE would have taken care of this for you AFAIK. So, before tweaking settings by hand, it would be interesting to try to understand why this hadn't been done automatically.

Code:
vi /etc/ld.so.conf
And add your KDE lib dir in there.

When you're done, run ldconfig

P/S: Do all of the above as root.

It is usually necessary to add /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf

It's been a few months since I last used KDE (I don't even have it installed now), but as far as I can remember, the KDE libs are in /opt/kde/lib and not at the "normal" places

I checked my RH 9 install and it is using /usr/lib

Of course where ever it is the warning message should have said something like "library files were added to /blah/blah/blah

That's the path you need to add.

Don't forget to run ldconfig

The strange thing is that I did not have /usr/lib in my /etc/ld.so.conf.

I suspect it's setup in an evironment variable or maybe it's one of the default locations.
