Edit>Preferences>Helper App in Seamonkey.
Hi: The window only shows three types: Podcast, Video podcast and Web feed. How do you do to add new types? The help doesn't say a word about this.

There is no way to do that from Seamonkey of Firefox UI.
The mime types and the way they are handled are stored in ~/.mozilla/<application>/<your profile>/mimeTypes.rdf.
<application> can be firefox or seamonkey
You can edit this file manually to populate it, see its format description here, or copy the file from your firefox profile to your seamonkey profile (I just did that and it works), but the simplest way is just to download a file of a given type (File -> Open file) choose an action and check "Do this automatically for files like this one from now on" then OK.
Next time you will open the preference window you'll see that this mime type has been added (and you can change the settings you first chose).
The rationale for this behavior, if I can guess it, is that there would be no point in adding a mime type to the file mimeTypes.rdf without an associated setting for its holding.

Thanks Didier. That's right! I downloaded a PDF file, checked the box and chose /usr/bin/okular. When I downloaded it next, it automatically called okular. However, it seems not so easy to change this behavior for the file manager. I can right click a filename and then choose (say a pdf file) a pdf reader but I have to repeat this operation every time I want to read a PDF file. There is no option in the file manager Edit>Preferences window to link a file type to an application.

Slackware includes a lot of file managers. Which one are you speaking of?

It's not in Edit>Preferences but first select a file of the type you want, then in the menu choose Editar>Configurar actiones personalizadas...
PS I am not a Thunar user but a quick search on the Internet led me to this page, that you could have founded yourself, I assume

You made me make a little research. After selecting a file, right clicking on it opens a pop-up menu. In that menu, then, Properties>General>Open with. Thanks anyways for your replies.
NOTE: the Help button in the Configure Custom Actions does not respond. That's why I asked for help.

What kind or level of help you can get clicking on a Help button widely varies upon application, as it is a design decision of the developers.
Sometimes (OpenOffice or LibreOffice comes to mind), doing that gives you a access to lot of resources built in the UI. Sometimes that links to help pages on the Internet. In other cases, that gives you very few information.
Whatever you get that way, very often you can find more complete or specific information on the Internet.
