I have only recently begun to use slackpkg, but only from my own rsync'd repos.

Smileys noted, but you two both have good points. I've got probably another fifteen years of life expectancy if I'm lucky, and I'm not going to waste it on stuff that can be done quicker and more accurately by a very small shell script. However, it's people doing it manually like you folk (and me, before I got lazy) that keep the layered tools lean and mean. Ubuntualisation happens when the layered tools become the new baseline that grows layered tools that become the new baseline. So I'm deeply thankful that neither of you are lazy like me

Anyway, sorry about the thread drift. Like everybody else I use Alien Bob's vlc. It's fab.

Yes but I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the package. I can run it with gdb no problem - just not on its own.

Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to install it? I can download the file from Slackbuilds, but I don't have a clue where to go from there.

My first post linked to AlienBOB's repository. Pick your architecture i486 = pkg or x86_64 = pkg64, then pick your Slackware version and then download the package and install it with installpkg.

For example if you ran Slackware64 14.1

Code:
$ wget http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/vlc/pkg64/14.1/vlc-2.1.5-x86_64-1alien.txz
$ su
Password:
# installpkg vlc-2.1.5-x86_64-1alien.txz
P.S. You really should verify the package via the signature (the similarly named .asc file) first.
