I'd like to give it a go (again) but I'm not sure which versions are suitable for 64_14.2.
@mats_b_tegner Should I clone your repo instead of Ryan's?
Looks like source packages from your repo are linked against newer versions
and you've already updated build scripts.
If I choose to use enlighten-me.sh, would it be sufficient to add lines
ephoto\ and rage\ under # Loop for all packages section, to include those into the build queue?
Thanks!
K
I haven't used the enlighten-me.sh script for ages so I don't know if it works. You will need to install meson from SBo on -stable to In order to use my updated build scripts. I downloaded the sources from https://download.enlightenment.org/rel/
I build and install in the following order: efl, python-efl, enlightenment, ephoto, rage, terminology

I get an efreetd error message every time I launch E23.
It doesn't show up in E22.4. It's annoying because efreetd does seem to be running before enlightenment so I don't know what the problem is. Maybe it's possible to add efreetd to .xinitrc?

Dang!
Same here after forced re-login caused by screen freeze while removing iBar apps.
No sound at all and I have no clue where to look for that.
No visible sound setting, except volume icon on the shelf,
which opens an empty window - no input, output etc.
I'm going to check how it builds with enlighten-me.sh.
When it comes to speed, I doubt my machine would match high demands,
but we'll see.
This DE is not resource hungry, so it's gotta be something else.
Efl building ATM and it may take a while for a complete build.

You should be able to find advanced sound settings by right-clicking on the volume icon (Mixer)

Well, the build using enlighten-me.sh seemed successful.
Upon first boot I was able to set advanced sound properties, Deadbeef played well,
I even heard sounds while typing in terminology.
FFox, VLC, Libreoffice etc. also behaved well.
BUT, as soon as I switched to XFCE, pulse audio server was dead.
It didn't respond on any command (start-pulseaudio-x11, pulseaudio --start)
Several log in/out attempts and switching to INIT 3 didn't help, so I rebooted.
This time I started XFCE session first, then switched to E23.
No audio (empty settings box on right click, alsamixer didn't respond to command), efreetd error etc.
Also, directories containing the efreetd error log (as specified in error window) were not created,
so I couldn't check for details.
@mats_b_tegner Experienced advice would be much appreciated.

I don't use Xfce or PulseAudio any longer so I'm at a loss what is happening there I use the ALSA backend for everything. With regards to the efreetd error, check your environment variables, there should be one called:
Code:
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp/xdg-LRTzVC
or similar in the xdg directory there should be a socket file:
Code:
bash-5.0$ cd xdg-LRTzVC/
bash-5.0$ ls
dconf/ e-mats@0/ pulse/
bash-5.0$ cd e-mats\@0/
bash-5.0$ ls
1196|0=
bash-5.0$

Me too, but pulseaudio in Slackware is (almost) inevitable because it's used for Bluetooth
audio (BlueZ 5) introduced in 14.2.
I didn't bother to change anything, even if I don't need bluetooth/BlueZ/pulse.
For me it just works, with alsa as a backend for all apps.

Actually, I have two dirs:
Code:
tmp/xdg-AzMlEG$ ls
deadbeef/ e-kole\@0/ pulse/
/tmp/xdg-AzMlEG/e-kole@0$ ls
1279\|0=
Code:
/tmp/xdg-ZPJ0px$ ls
e-kole\@0/ pulse/
/tmp/xdg-ZPJ0px/e-kole@0$ ls
1617\|0=
Both have hidden .ecore dirs with efreetd subdir, but those are empty.
Second was created yesterday, at first login on previous build.
Is it safe to delete both and start afresh?

Reason: typos
What are the memory usage for enlightenment? For example, after stating XDM and choosing my WindowMaker WM I see htop memory used is up about 80M, while KDE is up about 220M and XFCE is about 240M. I don't mind using alternative up to date desktop environments, but I don't like what XFCE is becoming and KDE latest from AlienBob requires using -current and I desire to stay on stable 14.2. AlienBob's KDE5_16.11 could be installed on 14.2, but that leaves me with an ageing DE. So I keep seeing e19 thread pop up on the threads list and keep wondering... Should I try it and what is the easiest and most reliable way to install on 14.2, SBo or the shell from page 1 of this thread? Cheers, BrianA_MN
BTW where does one get rage and ephoto, since they don't appear to be on Slackbuilds?

The directories in /tmp can be deleted safely. They are recreated on every startup.

@mats_b_tegner Thank you, for being an advocate for an alternative DE for Slackware. Your efforts and work are appreciated by many. Thanks for the memory comparison use specifically.
I notice on page 15 there is a long list of dependencies. If I use sbopkg/sboui the list of dependencies for enlightenment is rather short (bullet, lua, luajit, efl). So I'm wondering what is the difference between your git and the SBo version of enlightenment?
What I'm asking is not the enlightment package, but the "enlightenment" DE differences. For example maybe the explanation is that if I install the SBo version by Erik Falor, then I'll get the basic desktop and file manager, but not the additional packages that the developers provide for a complete DE in the true sense of a desktop environment, I'll need to integrate the other packages.
What would be ideal is if you'd look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compar...p_environments and tell me which enlightenment packages would be included in your git and what is not included in the SBo. I realize this is a large request and don't expect you to accept the SBo version, but would you at least be open to responding in comparison for your own git?

Mine and Ryan's slackENLIGHTENMENT GitHub repositories differ from the SBo scripts in that we provide build scripts for the Ephoto image viewer and the Rage video player. I have updated my enligtenment.SlackBuild to E23 which uses the meson build system. SBo version is still on E22.4 which still uses GNU autotools. There are differences in the build options in the efl.SlackBuild compared to SBo.
Erik Falor has build scripts on SBo for EFL 1.21.1, Python-EFL 1.21 vs my EFL 1.22.3, Python-EFL 1.22. Terminology on SBo is on version 1.3.2 vs my 1.5.0. Compared to say KDE, Enlightenment still lacks an email client or an office suite.

Hi Mats_b_tegner Thank you for the clarification. Being that I'm running stable 14.2 and your git is for -current, I'll probably stick with the SBo packages, which are tested against stable, before I would try the git versions. Also, since I do have a full Slackware install, neither ePhoto or Rage should be necessary although I'm sure they are great programs. Linux options are great. Cheers, BrianA_MN

I have tested the SBo packages as well and they seem to work well even though they are a few versions behind my GitHub repo.
