dwm and scrotwm questions
 

I am going to try out a tiling wm and I have narrowed my search down to scrotwm and dwm. I installed scrotwm from slackbuilds.org but it did not show up as a selection when I ran xwmconfig? Any ideas as to why? So then I went install dwm from slackbuilds.org but saw there was only a build script for slackware 13 as opposed to 13.1 which is what I am running. So two questions for dwm, one why is there no slackbuild for 13.1, and two when I tried to use the slackbuild for 13 this also didn't show up under xwmconfig, any thoughts?

It's up to those buildscripts to drop a file in /etc/X11/xinit/ and apparently they don't (though, IMO, they should). It's simple enough to edit whatever .xinitrc you have to change the wm to what you want, however.

Yeah, what he said above, you'll have to manually add it to .xinitrc. I used dwm for a while. I would like to side note for you though, you may want to try wmii. It's by the same people that do dwm, but it doesn't have the same problems with Java AWT that dwm has. It also has some better integrated features. With dwm you're going to find a lot of problems running Java applications because dwm is not a parenting window manager. If you do use wmii though, download it from their website, not the slackbuild because the slackbuild is outdated.

What hkothari said. I found that dwm invariably crashed when web browsing with Firefox. That said, I otherwise liked dwm when I tried it out, but you should be aware that, by design, the only way to configure dwm is by recompiling it. Not a big deal, but you'll need to adapt your SlackBuild accordingly. Because of the crashing, I found wmii a bit more usable, though the Plan9 dependencies are a bit odd.

If you use the latest version from the wmii website (v 3.9.2) there are no dependencies that need to be installed. The slackbuild is for 3.6 though, far outdated.
