dvd in slack 9
greetings, all. i am a complete newbie, lacking any and all experience with linux. what i lack in brains though i've been attempting to make up with heart, going cold turkey/microsoft-free in favor of slack 9 on the sink-or-swim philosophy. could someone out there throw me a life-preserver and talk me through the basics of playing a dvd on slack? i've downloaded every tgz of ogle i could find, yet whenever i try to run the thing it complains about not finding some sort of library. some of the other posts on this subject mentioned compiling from source, a subject too scary for me to undertake on my own at this early date--anyone willing to hold my hand through the process?:newbie:

I watch DVDs on MPlayer and it works very well.
You have to compile it from source though :D |
ahh the "some sort" library i know it... ;) actually it may well be libdvdread, which you will need to install, yes. without some slightly more useful information can't really say that much. compiling from source is a doddle though. You might also prefer http://mplayerhq.hu, more powerful and comes with absolutely everything needed to play dvd's, no other libraries...

the exact error message is:
"error during dlopen: libglade.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" Ogle's page contains the following FAQ: "Q: It fails at startup with an error about not finding a shared library. A: You probably have a faulty 'ld'. Make sure that you have version 2.11s or later. Upgrade 'ld' (it comes with binutils) or add the right path (usually /usr/local/lib/ogle) to the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH." i tried downloading a new copy of binutils, but without success. how do i find the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH to edit it (and once i've found it, can i just open it up in pico to change it, or is some sort of compilation required?) |
install glade from your slackware cd. Its probobly in the /slackware/gnome or the /slackware/l directory.
Compiling is easy, its no big deal. |
it's not anywhere, you just set it wherever you wish. but you should actually just install the glade library really... no idea why it wants it though.. strange.
