Unhappy Du command question

I am using du after mounting and it is constantly coming up with 0 bytes. This can't be accurate. What can I do to get a correct command. I am using du - h /dev/sdc and it comes back 0 even though there is 25Mb or more of disk usage.

That's probably because /dev/hdc is device node, and du command works with directories.

edit:

Quote:
The basic syntax for du is:

du [options] [directories and/or files]

Is there data written to the raw device sdc, or are you simply forgetting about the partition? and use the path of your mountpoint as the du argument not the device.

By the way df might be more suitable for your needs.

A nice alternative is ncdu, I like it quite a bit.
