dropline + kcontrol = hinting broken :(

Hello dear slackers,

I've got some problem here which is driving me crazy.

I have slackware 10.2 with the latest dropline gnome. Everything was fine until I did the next thing:

- I compiled k3b (because gnomebaker is just not what I'm looking for in a burning app)
- my fonts in k3b were too big (because dropline seems to run at 96 dpi)

- so I went into kcontrol to lower the font sizes

=> the result was my font hinting seems broken now, in kde as well as in gnome.. even when I reset the font settings everywhere.

So hinting is enabled in gnome font settings, and also in kde, but still my fonts stay jagged as if there is no hinting.

Does anyone know what happened here?

Do you by any chance have something like qtgtk installed. Because qtgtk will hijack your font settings, and cause other programs to ignore setting you give it. If that's the case, I would recommend uninstalling it and deleting the gtkrc from your home directory.
Also, You could explore recompiling freetype, it's easy and you can enable nice things like the bytecode interpreter while you're at it.

Try reinstalling the freetpye and fontconfig packs. They should be cached in /var/cache/dropline-installer/

upgradepkg --reinstall /var/cache/dropline-installer/fontconfig-2.3.2-i686-2dl.tgz
upgradepkg --reinstall /var/cache/dropline-installer/freetype2-2.1.10-i686-2dl.tgz

Hello people,

Many thanks for your responses!

I have in the meantime found the solution to my problem. It seems everytime after I launch kcontrol it creates a file .fonts.conf in my home directory. This overrides any configuration I make in gnome. When I remove this file .fonts.conf everything is back to normal.
