ah ok, i know this is abit offtopic, but is gnome 2 still use-able , i know theres a fork named MATE, but ive also seen a few distro's like gentoo, slackware, Fuduntu still using gnome 2

but i would worry about GTK 3+ and new application compatibility

slackware doesn't use gnome at all. There were a few gnome projects for slackware and dropline is one of them but gnome isn't a part of slackware itself. I don't know if someone attempted to use gnome2 (or its forks) on the newest slackware. Personally I don't think highly of things like MATE (there are also some others). I find gtk+3 great and I love the new gnome3 interface, it looks good, has some nice features, yes.. some new bugs... but it is always so with new versions, complex software need time to eliminate all problems - it is a stair to progress. It's just my opinion. The most gnome programs a ported to gtk+/gnome3. Otherwise slackware ships gtk+1 and gtk+2

You can try gnome 2.32 from dropline for slackware 13.0 iirc. Otherwise there is a gnome 2.26.3 for slackware 12.2 , I used this version up to a month ago for my business. I don't know if this works for you.

However I'm having a lot of trouble running it on a slackware 64 current.

1 - it was complaining about the libicule.49.so during the pango installation I have libicule.51 and had to install the version 49 again....

2 - After that it complains about the gtk.immodules for gtk+2, it says it not there, but it was... then i installed it manually and could go on.

3 - after that when I reach about 32% of the installation ( I think it stops when it tries to install gdm. ) I get an error "usermod: no changes"... to overcome it i choose to install only the minimal core... ok.

4- after I installed everything, and executed the command startx, it complained about gtk again... "QGtkStyle was unable to detect the current GTK+ theme." ... then I did the following: export GTK2_RC_FILES="$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0" and edited the file .gtkrc-2.0 adding the following: gtk-theme-name="mytheme".

5 - Python complains about pulseaudio it says it is too old and asks for version 0.9.15 or higher... But as far as I know dropline installs the proper version.

6 - Now I get this: Processing triggers for libgtk3.0-0 ...
Cannot load module /usr/lib/gtk-3.0/3.0.0/immodules/im-ibus.so: GModule (/usr/lib/gtk-3.0/3.0.0/immodules/im-ibus.so) initialization check failed: GLib version too old (micro mismatch)

Remembering that dropline also installs an older version of Network-manager than I have and also some packages that is already in the Slackware repo.

Could you tell me what could be the problem?? Before trying to install Dropline, i successfully installed cinnamon with gnome 3.7 on Slackware, it was a long process, but gnome normally tells you what is missing, the only real pain was systemd.

My slackware is the latest current as 29.03.2013

Heh, nice to hear you got so far. I would say its good that you could come up to that stage because the differences from 14.0 to current are quite important already.

I would say that probably its easier to check out the svn tree of the build system and rebuild it over your current system.

Dropline gnome 3.6 gnome was compiled for a Slackware 14.0 and not current.

We will see if we do a simple upgrade to 3.6 and make it out 3.8 with step by step upgrades. Not sure if it will work because of some
new requirements gnome 3.8 have.
In any case it will be for a stable slackware release. If we see we can not upgrade what we have, we will wait for the slackware current become a stable release and then build the latest available gnome for it.

We do not use Slackbuild scripts. We have our own build system, which you can find here [1] and all the instructions on how to build it
by yourself.

Hi. All packages from kde group are meant. You can remove them with slackpkg using:
or you can uncheck this group during the slackware installation. Good luck!

For listing the packages in the group you can use sometimes for example:
but you'll have problems with one-letter-groups and there's no better way so far I know. Of course you can see the included packages in each group on the installation cd on the ftp server.

To remove all kde is not necessary at all for using the desktop. This wiki page is to help us the devs on how to set up the correct environment for building up the packages. The kde stuff is removed to not accidentally some package link to some kde lib. This is the reason, but its only when building it up. You can safely install dropline gnome along with a full slackware install.
