Dropline Gnome 3.6 ALPHA - Released !

dropline GNOME 3.6 ALPHA – Released !

Hi peeps, its a happy day today , the end of the world !

Today 12-12-12 the day of the check-sound (one, two, one, two, one, two) we have also a nice surprise, we reached the ALPHA state for our dropline GNOME 3.6 release.

Get the installers for Slackware 14.0 from here:

32bit
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-i686-1dl.txz
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-i686-1dl.txz.md5

64bit
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-x86_64-1dl.txz
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-x86_64-1dl.txz.md5

This release is probably one of the best releases done up to today, at least at first sight I can say that the desktop is really stable.

All this was possible thanks two 2 big developers who lost a lot of time building and fixing the packages:

Mr. Eugen Wissner and Mr. Bart Van Der Hall

My personal thanks to them for their great work. I can also say that also other people was involved in this release and we all are really thankful to all of you.

That’s it, please test the release and report whatever you find wrong.

From now on we will concentrate on updating the packages and fixing bugs. We will start cleaning up what is wrong and creating a unified default theme. After we fix most of that stuff we can quickly do BETA stage and after that RC.

If you feel that there is not a program shipped which could benefit all of us speak now and step up, BETA stage will be only for fixing bugs and no new programs will be added.

That’s it, test, test, test, and report !

The dropline GNOME development team

Thank you and the rest of the team for doing this. Will definitely give it a try.

I take it that this needs to be done on a clean install? How many, if any baseline Slackware packages get replaced?

We have not counted how many are replaced, but there are very few of them. Basically whatever is on gnome servers it was updated to what gnome needs.
On this release we use Slackwares Firefox since its up to date and Pat does a great job keeping it up to date all the time.

A warning. This is an ALPHA release, and I had troubles getting it installed yesterday night on a x86-64 machine. SO please be patient while we do fixes to get it
install cleanly.

If possible report on our ML or create tickets on sf.net trac.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I may fire up a virtual machine and install it there. :)

saxa 12-13-2012 09:25 AM

Yes, for sure its better to try into a VM. Otherwise you can download all the packages and put them into /var/cache/dropline-installer and start the installer.
It should install you all the stuff. Don't forget to put also the relative .md5 checksum files.

it is great to hear Dropline is active! I have really good memories from using your GNOME releases in the past and have gotten great help in the forum. I wish you all the best! :):):)

Many many thanks.

By the way I have to say that the 64bit installer is not working as expected. For now the solution is to download and install by hand.

Anybody can confirm if 32bit install works ok ? It worked on my virtual machines on both archs but trying it from zero again its not working at least the 64 bit one.

Doing a 32-bit install right now. Seems to be downloading and working.

saxa 12-13-2012 03:14 PM

Ok hopefully it gets through. Probably the problem is only on 64bit.

Well, as soon as I typed that, the downloads stopped. Not sure if your server is getting hammered or not. Looks like bandwidth is being maxed out.

saxa 12-13-2012 03:55 PM

Yep, thats Barts server, he does not have much bandwith, I will try to copy all of his files onto droplinegnome.org.

babbab 12-13-2012 09:25 PM

I tried to install dropline gnome alpha version today. and I'm reporting it failed.
when it tried to install pango it says i'm missing libharfbuzz.so something.
and after that I needed to install fresh copy of slackware 14
man I need install virtual box before try something like this

saxa 12-13-2012 09:50 PM

Yep, thats why its called ALPHA. Which version have you tried ? 32 or 64 bit ?

babbab 12-13-2012 11:08 PM

32-bit

zeroberto 12-14-2012 12:30 AM

I tried the 64bit. It reports that a lot of package is missing. I think everything is missing from the System Software category.

kite 12-14-2012 02:39 AM

Dropline was pretty. I will try it inside vm again to have some good old memory back...

bartgymnast 12-14-2012 04:16 AM

for the 64bit, my mirror of 64bit was not fully updated.
I removed all packages from there and will remirror.

for the 32bit packages.

the temporary workaround to installer problems are to install the following 4 packages manually first.
harfbuzz
dconf
at-spi2-atk
at-spi2-core

after this, full install will run completly

tuxbg 12-14-2012 06:22 AM

I have a problem all stuff installed corectly but gnome start in fallback mode.
To be able to run gnome-shell i have to do this
Stop polkit to autostart, cd /usr/share/gnome/ui/js/components and mv network.js network.js.disabled
cd /etc/pcks11/modules and rm gnome-keyring
Sorry for my poor english
Slackware-64 current

saxa 12-14-2012 07:44 AM

It seems that we have a wrongly created index file for 64bit tonight I will try to recreate it. As for gnome-shell it runs ok for me with startx but not from gdm.

tuxbg 12-14-2012 08:21 AM

Thanks

saxa 12-14-2012 08:25 AM

I want to ask you that if you report here the problems please report the following information:
Slackware version: 14.0 or current
Dropline version: 32bit or 64bit
Copy and paste the exact error if possible or describe it in detail what happened.

Please remember, that the packages are built against some order, and if you do not install all of them most probably you will
get in troubles, because of missing libs or dependencies.

Also a note, do not try to uninstall with the installer because I'm not sure it works.

If you want to uninstall please do it manually with:

removepkg *-?dl.txz and reinstall slackware shadow package before you logout or reboot.

I run Slackware 14 32bit, when dropline installer was trying to fetch packages from the default source, a lot of error 404 not found message on the screen. Please check it.

Wow - Dropline is alive! Salute to Saxa.

Kite, yup since this is testing packages we do not upload them yet to sf.net, so not all servers are fast and have enough bandwith. But we will improve that.

Thanks David.
Yep, it was all the time, but had not much forces to release so often. We do usually LTS stuff :) I'm still running up to now Slackware 12.2 with DLG 2.26.3 on my work netbook.

saxa 12-14-2012 04:38 PM

Tuxbg, please try to run gnome directly without GDM. It seems that GDM is not starting gnome-shell the proper way. I got it to run by simply running startx from my user.
gnome-shell --replace was working just for few minutes and then crashed.

tuxbg 12-14-2012 04:58 PM

I'm really sorry about that, because a have a minimal install of Slackware and i miss a dependencies, the problem package for me was a db48
And there is another issue i cant watch videos in youtube i have to use html5,and there's no sound only in firefox

And this is the error

Great ! :)

I want just to remember that we built our packages against a full slackware install, so this means that any install which is way personalized it will most probably not have all the deps and therefore will not work.

Great ! Nice to hear that. Now you can help improve :) Please report bugs on sf.net page. Create tickets so we can start fixing whatever is not working the way you want it :D .

It wont be exactly like this, but you can try :D

Enjoy and thanks for using and testing !!!

babbab 12-14-2012 09:23 PM

I'm using installed gnome as I write, and already have a few bugs to report.
How do I create tickets? I went to the sf.net site and navigated a little.
Missed or didn't find any instruction. Thing I found is..
Is it true that I need to know SQL language in order to create tickets?

saxa 12-14-2012 09:25 PM

No you dont need to know SQL, just you need to be logged in and have a sf.net account.

Go here:

Please run dropline-installer as root and you should get the gnome-tweak-tool. Please report if any problems.

Good day,
Just tried dropline Gnome out of curiosity.
My system: Slackware64 14.0 with quite some packages from SBo.
As mentioned earlier, I had to download all the packages via installer first, then install mentioned packages by hand, only then installer worked. Gnome would start in fall back if started from GDM. However, I've used xwmconfig to select gnome and then used slim, which I already had on my system and now Gnome starts properly.

Few problems or annoyances I've noticed while using it for a day:
1. Sound applet (or whatever it is called now) does not support OSS v4
2. I am unable to find a way to store view settings in file manager (sort by type, directories first, etc) everytime I reopen file manager - it's a mess.
3. Rythmbox crashes every time I try to enter settings
4. If I download some file via firefox and then right click on it and select open in folder, disk usage analyzer opens instead.

Other than this it seems to be quite usable. Many thanks for your hard work :hattip:

Many thanks for trying it.Yesterday night I did a new fresh install and it worked out well, without any need of downloading by hand. Only problem was we had twice listed ragel package in the index file and installer said is missing. After correcting this it worked out from the first try.

As you say you have quite some Sbo packages, not that this is wrong, but we cant know which ones you have and if they conflict with the once gnome requires.
So I would consider this as not a problem since we can not solve some things which over here work. But definitely will take more attention on them.

That is a very good point and I cannot ask for more. However, it would be interesting to see if someone with a clean system experiences those issues. If not, I could start hunting them myself. So far, I just tried to move away as much .config and other .stuff from my home, as I could. This solved all problems I was having with keyring being not accessible.

I installed the 64bit version on clean Slackware and I can confirm that Rhythmbox crashes with segmentation fault by opening the settings. From dmesg:
Code:

rhythmbox[2191] general protection ip:7f5fd2417184 sp:7fff10b53500 error:0 in libgstreamer-0.10.so.0.30.0[7f5fd23e9000+ae000]
And from Gnome Fallback when I try to open Places > Home (or Desktop, Computer) it opens Audacious.

saxa 12-16-2012 10:54 AM

Good. I installed on 3 machines x86-64 on clean system and so far we have cheese not working , but most of the other stuff seem to work.

Do you have gstreamer1 installed ? They install in pralel with slackwares gstreamer. On my laptop works ok.

zeroberto 12-16-2012 11:39 AM

Yes, I have:
Code:

$ ls /var/log/packages/gstreamer*
/var/log/packages/gstreamer-0.10.36-x86_64-1
/var/log/packages/gstreamer1-1.0.3-x86_64-1dl

belka.ew 12-16-2012 11:57 AM

Yeah, rhythmbox has some problem. It crashes also with segmentation fault by an audio-cd inserting. it should be correctable.
