Dramatic drop in performance

I've recently done a fresh install of Slackware 10.2 on my computer. I've got an AMD 3000+ processor and a GeForce FX5500 graphics card.

When I first tried GLX gears after installing it clocked out at about 2400-2600 FPS, which is about what I expected it to.
Today I installed mesalib because Nexuiz was complaining about not being able to find libGL.so and for some reason glxgears now only clocks out at 400-450 FPS.

Any ideas why?

Maybe mesalib overwrote the libGL.so?
Maybe you could've just linked to libGL.so? (some error msg would be nice)
But i wouldn't install mesalib since it's old as hell.
(btw i also played with nexuiz with an nvidia card, and it worked like a charm)

ah.. problem there, I've already installed mesalib. I used checkinstall though, so I'll remove the package and see if things improve. As for Nexuiz, I've had it working before without any trouble so I'm sure it's a temporary thing. I didn't realise meslib was old... I'll be back with an update

right, I've got my speed back up.

The errors I'm now getting from Nexuiz are:

^7Unable to open symbol list for libGL.so.1
^7Unable to load GL driver "libGL.so.1"
