downloading and installing


in slackware, what is the quickest way to install programs (like firefox)?

check out linuxpackages.net, download the tgz package, install it by "installpkg pkgname.tgz"

what is the best way to download things (preferably not using a desktop)?

What do you mean by not using a desktop? Text-mode? If so, you could use lynx or links (text based web browsers) and also wget if you already now the link.

You could try slapt-get.
