Do you want Games for Slackware?
Guys,
I am currently maintaining a website that is dedicated to building and maintaining games for Zenwalk Linux.
A gaming website.
You may or may not know that Zenwalk was originally Slack-based and still continues to be Slackware compatable.
The only major difference being Slackware leaning towards KDE and Zenwalk towards GTK and XFCE with Support for KDE.
Ok, this is not a commercial for Zenwalk, hehe.
My point is, I am wondering how great a demand for games for Slackware there is.
Is it worth my effort to build games for Slackware as well?
I already have the sources and build scripts, it's just a matter of recompiling on a Slackware system.
The hard work is already done.
Please take a look at the site if you are interested and let me know what you think.
http://www.zengamer.tuxfamily.org/
If you like it, I will add a Slackware section there and you can have a great time with the rest of us.
The project is called ZenGamer and the team consists of me (Project Lead and Webmaster), six other developers and two testers.
Thanks for your time.

Hi
Great site, nice and easy to navigate.
There are a good number of games, but I have a couple of questions.
If Zenwalk is Slackware compatible, would the games not just work, would you need a Slackware section?
Just installed 20K light years and pygame with no ill effects.
A number of these games, but not all, are on Linuxpackages.net, you would not need to rebuild, merely link, would this not be a more sensible option.
Samac
P.S. More games please.

Yes, we want games for Slackware!
Nice website
I do get tired of having to install games in a myriad of different ways, eg slack packages, compiling from source, autopackage, RPMs, etc etc.
A site with a bunch of games all packaged up just for slackware would be VERY VERY nice
Forrest.

No problem.
Every package offered (Except what is in the "Contributed Section) is required to have it's build script in "/usr/src/package-name" or I won't post it untill it is rebuilt.
If you install any of the games, or just download an uncompress them, you will find the build script there.
Also I've created a "Source" section. In that category you will find a compressed TGZ archive of the original source code and the build script.
Also, games that you normally have to start via CLI (e.g. CUBE and 20 K Light years) I write simple faux-executables, custom icons and *.desktop files so that you can just click to run instead of opening up a terminal.
Games are supposed to be fun, no need for the command line, save it for later when you're tinkering with your latest kernel update.
About Linux packages...
They cover a wide variety of software there.
They also have a lot of people contributing that I do not know enough to trust. (No Offense :-)
We are strictly for gamers and shove all of our resources in that direction.
So the games are the best they can be, and so that you can enjoy them as much as possible.
Also, yes, the dependencies have links to the in the downlod section, easy to find and install.
Another thing, we build games per request first, so if a game you want is not available there, please register at ZenGamer and post a request.
I'm more than glad to build it and even happier to test it, hehe :-)

I wouldn't install a game distro unless I had too many PCs (I don't) but it would be cool to have a Slackware-based game live CD

I think for those things you might want Cedega. As far as I know wine doesn't handle games or at least it doesn't handle them well. As for Cedega... I never tried it, just heard roumors. GL.

Great idea. Nice site and nice layout. I usually d/l from linuxpackages, too, but a site dedicated to game packages for Slack would be welcomed by me.

We are offering a free download of the cvsCedega at ZenGamer (Emulators Category)
cvsCedega Download
That is a touchy subject in itself.
I am offering it until Transgaming asks me to take it down.
It is released under the Aladdin Free Public License (AFPL).
Here is my little disclaimer:
Quote:
This download is not being offered as a "free" version of Winex to be downloaded by the masses. The primary reason for the WineX CVS tree being publicly available "under the Aladdin Free Public License (AFPL) is to give outside" developers who have an interest in the project the ability to track the most current work, and to assist with code or testing. The work is very complex though, and only a limited number of developers have the skills required to contribute. The intent of the public CVS tree is *not* to provide a 'free' version of WineX that can be used without paying for it. Transgaming wants everyone with an interest in the project to contribute, whether they contribute code, or money to assist with our development efforts. Hence the reason Cedega is offered here.
|
I don't know how long we can offer it, so if you want it I advise you to get it soon.
:-)
I am offering it in hopes that someone will be inspired to write a completely free (As in speach and beer) open-source version of it after they see how well it works.
I love the great open-source games that are out there and I hope one day we can forget about Windows-based games all together.
Then again, Cedega is probably hurting the cause.

everyone, please as a favor to me, and old man and his pc...please email ATARI/Epic games and ask them to continue to keep making Unreal Tournament 2007 in Linux.
I've been going to linuxgamers but it's kind of weak on sorting by genre, like first person shooter, role play whatever.
Thank you & bye for now.
edited for clarity.

If the ZenGamer cvsCedega package ever DOES get taken down, all of those interested can use WineCVS instead...
http://winecvs.linux-gamers.net/index.php/Main_Page
...this is a script that allows you to build any of the following WINE variants on your machine:
Code:
1 ) cvscedega_head
*PTHREADS VERSION* - for newer distros
This profile gets the most recent, but also most bleeding
edge version of the free cvs cedega.
This is the PTHREADS version, therefore not for older glibc
based distributions.
2 ) cvscedega_head_old
*NON PTHREADS VERSION* - for older distros
This profile gets the most recent, but also most bleeding
edge version of the free cvs cedega.
This is the NON PTHREADS version for older distributions
based on glibc <2.3.1.
3 ) cvswine_head
Regular Wine:
This profile gets the latest bleeding edge wine from
CVS.
4 ) dx9wine
Regular Wine with Oliver Stiebers Direct3D9 Patches
5 ) rewind
Rewind is the fork of wine right before they went lgpl.
6 ) winex300_old
*NON PTHREADS VERSION* - does not work with newer distros
Gets the winex 3.0 CVS release. This is the version from CVS
that WineX 3.0 is based on.
7 ) winex310
*PTHREADS VERSION* - for NEWER distros (glibc >2.3.1)
Gets the winex 3.1 CVS release. This is the version from CVS
that WineX 3.1 is based on.
8 ) winex320
*PTHREADS VERSION* - for NEWER distros (glibc >2.3.1)
Gets the winex 3.2 CVS release. This is the version from CVS
that WineX 3.2 is based on.
9 ) winex330
*PTHREADS VERSION* - for NEWER distros (glibc >2.3.1)
Gets the winex 3.3 CVS release. This is the version from CVS
that WineX 3.3 is based on.
Cedega can be extremely useful for us gamers!

There are 6 Slackware boxen on this LAN right now -- 3 workstations, 2 laptops, and 1 server.
There are NO games installed or used on any of these boxen. I also build and repair computers,
installing Slackware Linux on new builds, and converting as many as possible. No games there.
The few customers I have who play games do so in Windows, saying Linux games don't compare.
So (where's your poll) my vote is " 'Just Say NO!' to games in Slackware."
