Do you use a DE on Slackware? Which?

Hey guys,

having trouble deciding between Xfce and KDE Plasma. If you use a DE, which do you prefer on Slackware? Which is "better supported"?

Didier Spaier 06-29-2018 04:58 AM

Well, I have been using LXDE, now I use MATE and you didn't list them so I won't vote ;)

All software in Slackware are well supported by the Slackware team. Depending of their experience some people will say that some DE is better supported but others will disagree, so I doubt that you can draw a clear conclusion about that.

As an aside all DE include a window manager by default, but it can most often be easily replaced by another one.

So: try all DE and window managers and stay with the one you prefer.

In my tiny netbook i am using mostly openbox.
In my desktop, i am switching between KDE, Xfce, Openbox. I use one of the them for some days or weeks in a row, then use another one and so on.
You don't have to make a decision and stick with it for ever.

I use i3-gaps, it works for me.

There should be a choice for "both XFCE and KDE Plasma"
I use them both depending on how i feel that day :)

I like XFCE but Plasma 5 has won me over for daily use

Don't forget ponce's excellent LXDE, which I have been using every day for six months on bare metal and it's flawless. More info:

https://wiki.lxde.org/en/Slackware

I run Slackware on a netbook but also on a VM in my Debian box. The VM runs Xfce and looks amazing at full screen if you have it set up [or 'riced'] well enough.

I've used KDE before with both Debian and Slackware and it's just too much for me. It's beautiful, but it's not that stable for me, and the constant tweaking one can do means I'm never totally happy, whereas with LXDE and Xfce I've hardly changed a thing in the months I've been using them and they look and work great.

For reference, LXDE:

Duplicate, for some reason.

Hi,

It depends on the device. On my Laptops, I will use KDE. On my ARM units I will use LXDE. Desktops will sometimes use XFCE or KDE and occasionally LXDE.

Just depends on the device and if it can service my needs so I will choose what feels good at the time.

Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

MAy I ask you where you got the Slackware menu button because I only find ones in white squares.

You're going to need a .png file.

I'm not totally sure where I got the one I use, but this is remarkably similar:

I use Xfce for productivity reasons. I've tried other environments but always find myself missing the functionality of Xfce. Never ran into any major bugs in Slackware with Xfce (or any small bugs for that matter). It seems like I always end up tweaking KDE Plasma more than doing work. I can never get KDE to look quite right.

With Xfce I install whisker menu and enable the built in window manager tweaks and it's plenty of eye candy while preserving great workflow and performance.

If you see one you like in the lower left hand corner of any post on this board, you can right click on it and save the image.
