do rtl8191su & slackware mix?
 

slackware 14.0 x64 KDE

am trying to get Realtek RTL8191SU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter to work in my 'garage computer' and am having a rough time. can this work, or am i beating a dead horse?

Not sure about your precise device.

I have a Realtek RTL8188CE (as reported by lspci) wireless adapter in a Lenovo Thinkpad. I downloaded a kernel module (rtl8192ce) from the Realtek website and the wifi works fine. Yours is obviously not the exact same device but the module may still work or they have supply another module which will do the job.

It looks like you need binary firmware for it, can't check right now if it is part of Slackware 14.0. At http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/ker...t/tree/rtlwifi you can get the rtl8712u.bin. From what I've read this should be the one. See http://wiki.debian.org/rtl819x - they suggest this file, even though the numbers are different :) good luck with this

If you can't get it work with the official rtlwifi driver and necessary firmware, then use the driver from the manufacturer's website. The manufacturer's driver needs no extra fimware.

i found another solution. the wifi range extender in the garage has a RJ-45 plug in it, so i just connected to it with an ethenet cable. . . & worked without any configuration! and no usb dongle to hassle with!

. . now trying to install wifi on computer in house (slackware 14.1 & RTL8191SU adapter) and getting ready to give up. have wicd configured and WICD network manager gui shows ‘connected’ with 100% signal and green lines (even shows neighbor’s network). . . but none of the internet browsers will get online.
any ideas?

What does wicd show about the connection? Do you have an IP address? Can you ping, say, www.google.com?

duhh? the wicd interface is completely gone today!

the wpa_gui says 192.168.1.101

. . and now the wicd shows up! and IP is 192.168.1.100 this is really scrooey looey.
but browsers still do not connect.

installed linux mint 13 KDE. wifi works out of box.

& using slackware 14.1 on my wired rigs.

Very simple answer is your router is not talking to the internet providers modem. This usually has a problem with
cable internet providers. The account is set up on your UID (the original computer used to make the account connection)and you will need to clone the UID MAC number to the router.

the other reason is you did not DHCPD auto or static I do not know your set up. but 80 percent of home wifi is auto-DHCPD when it does that it sends a mac number of your UID. many router have a setting that says clone mac.

On mine I just put it in.

now for DSL set to auto dhcpd. after you have it working. go back and set up security on the wifi connection.
