Is there anyway to open konqueror in fluxbox but.. make the konqueror not load up all the other KDE stuff in the background?

I noticed the konqueror (which I was launching from flux in terminal) launches ARTS, and some other stuff too.

I've noticed this actually if I launch any KDE application, like kwrite or kedit even, it wants arts...yuk.

Unfortunately a lot of KDE apps also start up kdeinit and other things. Doesn't seem to be any way around it.

I was afraid that was the case.

What other alternatives are there:
rox filer (which is a little akward, but works)
the xfce file manager
midnight commander in terminal

any other nice file manager's not KDE dependant?

Ive been using xfce for about 4 hours and it only crashed once, actually I think it was Firefox. I didnt have to reboot this time. I also dumped Firefox for continuous segmentation faults/Crashing and yea, I Downloaded the newest version.

yeah, firefox 1.5.0.4 is known to be very crash-prone for whatever reason...

"midnight commander gtk bad-copy": emelfm2. I've installed it coz I don't like rox very much but I must admit that I'm used to surf my dirs in fluxbox via aterm rather than via a file manager... I think that emelfm2 is not really good but is good enough for basic tasks. of course it shows only lists and not icons:

another light choice extremely windows-like is XFE (based on fox libs). here shots: http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/index.php?page=screenshots

I run xfce on one of my desktops for months and it never crashed. xfce should not crash. But then I don't run Firebox. Apps should be able to crash without taking the desktop with them.

What's awkwards about ROX? Of the ones you mentioned, it's head and shoulders above the rest. I liked the xffm (xfce fm) on the Slackware 10.2 as you can navigate extremely quickly but it has many bizarre quirks. And the later versions are so bad that I decided to abandon xffm now. xfe is another fm but it is also very poor from a GUI standpoint, popping up many extraneous windows.

There are a few other things ROX can do. You can associate file types with applications so when you click on a c program in ROX it pops up your choice of IDE, editor, etc. You can do it for any file type.

You can also get it to create menu bars and desktop icons if you use a window manager like flux/black/openbox.

And you can get it to set the desktop wallpaper.

I also didn't like ROX the first few hours. Now I think it's one of the best X apps I've seen.

ok this is going a bit OT...but: I don't like desktop icons and I'm used to open files inside programs (not click-ing on them) so I just use a file manager to surf inside my FS, my consideration about ROX are just related to my feeling with its interface not related to rox features (coz I don't use them!)

bye,
M

Yeah, I'm with you, I also like a clean desktop with nothing on it. Just saying it in case someone didn't know.

If you run a minimalist wm like black/flux/openbox then the associations make life a little quicker. I can open a new Emacs from ROX on the file I want than I can to start Emacs from a terminal on the file I want. I like to have multiple Emacs running instead of one with multiple buffers because sometimes I'm working on multiple projects at the same time.

I guess if you use a desktop then maybe life is different.

The ROX filer is a "little" akward to me, like one of the other's here said. It's probably one of those app's that if you use it for a while you can't live without it.

I dont think it's bad, I'm just not used to it. I tried using their rox desktop icons which also gave a nice background, but I lost my custom fluxbox menu when rox desktop is active.

I have to rtfm more on it is what it really boils down to. The rox system is not let's say "an ex-MS user friendly".
