Display list of active clients on a server?

Hi,

I'd like to display a list of all currently active clients on a server. I've been experimenting with this, and it looks like this task is not as easy as it would seem.

1. arp is not a solution, as it still displays a client's IP even after it's been disconnected.

2. The same goes for parsing DHCP's lease files.

3. Statically defined leases (using hwaddr) don't even appear in DHCP's lease files.

4. Nmap would be a solution, but port scanning seems a bit agressive.

Any ideas?

netstat <play-with-options>| grep ESTABLISHED ?

What do you mean under "Server" and "Client"? This is very general terms, and so very general task, which has no solution. So define "Server" and "Client" more precisely.
