Disabling the spacebar in Chrome/Chromium

The spacebar key in Chrome/Chromium seems to act in the same manner as the PGDN key in that it scrolls the screen up. When entering text in a textbox the spacebar acts normally. (This seems to be the default behaviour for firefox too).

The problem seems to come when entering text in a box that can only be displayed if you have flash installed. In that case, Chrome/Chromium does not appear to recognize the spacebar as a text character and treats it as a control character instead.

So I get the annoying situation where I am filling in a text box in the flash area and as soon as I hit the spacebar, OOPS! The text has disappeared off the screen!

Does anybody know how to stop Chrome/Chromium from treating the spacebar as a control character?

This is a known issue. There is a workaround in comment 18 of the bug.

This is a show-stopper for anyone that needs to use flash to fill out forms (or play games). Not sure why the developers continue to push it back, google it and see how many people are affected.

Here's a very hacky work-around. Install the Shortcut Manager extension. Add a new shortcut key SPACE for URL pattern * with Browser Action: Scroll down by 0 pixels. This will stop space bar scrolling on all pages, tweak URL pattern. Do this for Backspace as well.

But using #18, when you try put some text with space in text fields... the space will not be inserted... well, this happens to me.
It looks like the work around is not that simple.

It works for me and most of the others in the bug report.
