As the title suggest I disabled Nepmuk and Strigi.(may not be spelled right) I haven't seen an issue yet but need to know if I have a big issue coming.
I kept having an "indexing suspended" error popping up and temporarily locking up Firefox/Seamonkey. Also I am playing an online game that was acting quirky until I turned them off.
I would also consider installing openbox as well and then run kde/openbox session from kdm. This will further speed up KDE 4.2.4 or upgrade to current, or install vbatts KDE 4.3.1 packages. I never had any problems disabling the two programs you mention.
I disabled both services as well with no problems. Since I don't use/need them why have them loaded into memory? KDE also stabilized a bit without them. Anyway, KDE4 so far is not to my liking so for now I just switched to Xfce.
I'm also using XFCE, but with either XFCE or KDE, I have disabled both services from square one, without any ill effects.
Disabling them using Slack 13's stock XFCE installation is tricky, because there're some bugs with the "Service Disable/Enable" dialog system, which can be overcome if you frig with it enough (the names or descriptions of the entry you are looking at, are blank, until you check/uncheck them a few times just the right way).
I tried un-installing nepomuk/strigi completely, but then Konqueror won't run. Unfortunately for me, I'm still rather dependant on Konqueror as my preferred X file browser.
Many times I tried to get nepomuk/strigi working and tried very hard to get used to it.
I always end up disabling it, partially 'cause I don't find a use for it but mainly because I don't like a service using 30% of my Dual Core Turion64 processor (I know, it is not a top one but 90%+ of the time it is working at its lowest frequency, 800MHz) even when doing nothing. I mean, the Strigi indexing was finished, which is supposed to be the most cpu/disk intensive task, and still the nepomuk service was eating my CPU and using 200+MB of RAM.
I also found it unstable, with some of it configuration screens freezing for a few minutes some times
I sincerely hope it is better in new versions of KDE, I kind of like the whole 'semantic desktop' idea. Specially 'cause I have like 8GB of family photos & videos. But for now I think I'll stay with some content management system like ResourceSpace
