Direct Rendering not working (solution not found in guide)
Firstly I would like to say that I newb to linux and slackware so I apologize if this question is kind of rudimentary or if it gets asked alot. But anyways, I am having trouble getting direct rendering to initialize and I could not find the answer in the "Guide to enabling 3D acceleration" or from anywhere else on google.
Basically I am running Slackware 11.0 and I have a 256 MB ATI Radeon X700 Pro on AGP slot in the motherboard. I installed the latest drivers from ATI and used aticonfi --initial to configure my setup. When I use startx and then type glxinfo in the console it states that "direct rendering: no". then I typed glxgears and it showed that I was getting around 240 FPS. So I looked through the guide and played around with my xorg.conf file but I still could not got direct rendering to start.
I thought it may have been a problem with the agp modules not loading but when I type dmesg i find the phrases:
"agpgart: Detected on an intel i850 chipset"
"agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xf0000000"
So I don't think it is a problem with the kernel. But then again what do i know?
Here is my xorg.conf file:

I am also attaching the Xorg.0.log. Somewhere towards the bottom it says drmOpenDevice open failed and DRI initialization failed. Maybe it can't detect my card??? But I'm not sure how to fix this problem.

Ok, I solved the problem. The way I went about it was to try to reinstall the fglrx modules.
I went to the /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and tried to run ./make.sh but there was an error regarding an erroneous reference to the 2.4.33.something kernel when it should have been the 2.6.17.13 kernel. So I went into pkgtool and uninstalled all the 2.4.33 kernel modules and sources. And I installed the 2.6.17.13 source (something I should have done from the beginning but like i said I am a newb). Then I rebooted. Afterwards I went back to the /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and ran:
./make.sh
and then went to /lib/modules/fglrx
./make_install.sh
Then when I ran startx, DRI was up and glxgears had FPS of ~10500. Maybe this won't help most of you as you probably have not made the same newb mistakes as me, but there is someone out there whom can benefit from this.
