diff tool of choice ... for 14.2

Hi @all

i want to promote this difftool called meld
see post5499902 http://meldmerge.org/

Hi @atelszewski i just testet diffuse but it is not what i am thinking of, i use the cli for that

I think of comparing for example my "old" /etc direcktory to the just new installed one ...
"You can compare two or three folders and launch file comparisons"
it did light up the different files inside the folders, subfolders, and so on ...
i like and need the direcktory compare ability, and could edit the changed files than with syntax highlighting.

greetings
Slacker

diff can do directory comparisons, and is a real command line tool. You can use the tool you want of course, but I don't really understand your "promotion".

Hi,

i will (try) start it again ...
but you could only see what this programm is for, if you have try it by yourself.
how could one explain the diffrence of lynx to firefox ...
naturly one can use the normal diff or maybe colorize it, but meld is something totaly different.
i want to "promote" it here just because i think it is so powerfull ... it should be no replacement for anything, it is an evolution to directory comparission.

if i just want to move or coppy one file to an other place - surely i do use the cli but if i want to do more, i do use "mc" - so i can look inside of anny file formats, i can compare one folder to one other and so on - you all may know.

when i want to install a new slackware for example, i have to edit many files in the /etc hirachie and i start to compare the whole dir to my last good running system. and if i use meld for that i can do this with just one programm, i do not need any other tools there for.

i am just "a nice guy" who want to show you that there exist a tool, what you may not know about, and that it could be possible, that you never will miss it again when you have used it.

I can't live without it anymore

greetings

Well I have nothing against MC, but honestly, it doesn't give you "more power", it just ease some tasks, and frankly, it's just easier for "noobs".

Also, you should know that a lot of slackers are already experienced power users, and I guess most of them have seen meld in their computer life.

Alright you talked about it, nice, but posting a thread again just for that is "weird" in my POV. We should be "big enough" to decide ourselves what we need, and if we don't mind about meld it's not because we don't know it, it's because we don't NEED it...

You love it, good for you. Don't expect everybody having the same needs or level than yours. And it's not because you can't sleep without your Teddy Meld that it MUST be in the official repo. We all have tools that are not in the official Slackware repo (as an example I use tig a lot, and it's not in the official repo). You don't need to repeat yourself or open several threads just because you feel that we haven't hear you.

Honestly, I don't want to be rude, don't get me wrong, it's nice to share your point of view, but insisting on this might not lead to friendly answers .

I use it too, sometimes, it depends on which system I am and what I want to "diff" and if it's manual on in a shell script, etc. . Araxis Merge is good too, if you're on windows and willing to pay (or your company does it for you...).
