Question Devfs - SlackWare - Alsa - Newbie

Hi everybody,

First of all, let me say you my config:

P166 MMX
RAM:64 Mb
HD: 1,2 Gb
PS/2 Mouse
102 Int Keyboard
S3 Virge DX 4Mb
DXR3 Mpeg (Decoding MPEG card)

SlackWare 9.0 GNOME

And a newbie driving all....

Iīm trying to install ALSA for my AZT2320 sound card.
And as you known I need Kernel sources.
The problem is that with Slack installed (whithout sources) I only have 130 Mb of free space in HD.
I wonder: May I take the sources from CD for module compiling? and for Kernel compiling?

(Yes I known the sources can fit in 130 Mb but...for the future...)

Another doubt: Is devfs installed by default in Slack 9.0?
How can I known if devfs is working?
If not, have I to do ./snddevices?

For the S3 Virge DX 3D 4 Mb 86C375...which server should I use? Actually X is working but with the vesa server...and perhaps I could have some improvement with your ideas...although you donīt believe it works fine...I have already probe all the possible options in XF86Config...

Thanks in advance..

Patrick just added official support for alsa in -current (aka to-be slack-9.1). Consider updating to -current for easy alsa integration without kernel recompilation.
Slack doesn't have devfs enabled by default. So do :
$ groupadd audio
$ ./snddevices
and add your non-root user to audio group.
For devfs, re-compile your kernel with devfs (& mount devfs at boot), installpkg devfsd & reboot...
