/dev/pilot permissions and kpilot
I'm trying to set up my Zire 72 to synchronize via KPilot. I've written appropriate udev rules to point /dev/pilot to my Palm (usually /dev/tts/USB1). My first problem, however, is that that node is given -rw-rw--- permissions. So I can detect my Palm via pilot-link if I'm root. I've tried adding my normal user to group uucp, but it still can't detect the Palm. I've also tried chmod 666 on the node, but that is annoying for two reasons. First, the node doesn't exist until I actually press hotsync, but which time it's often too late to communicate with the Palm. Second, even if I do change the permissions, the node disappears after the hotsync process, and the user is denied from accessing the node in subsequent attempts. I need a way to either dynamically change the permissions of the node as it is created, or for a way to have it initialize as being world read/writeable.
My second question is that, after I get pilot-link to work properly, I'd want to use KPilot. From what I understand, KPilot is compiled against a certain version of pilot-link for it to function, and since my current KPilot is an upgrade, it probably will not work. I downloaded the KPilot 4.4.7 tarball from the official KPilot site, and I'm considering installing it. The package is labled as kdepim. I'm asking whether I have to remove my current kdepim packages before installing. If I do remove my current kdepim, does the compile only give me kpilot, or does it give me the entire kdepim package (i.e. KMail, Kontact, KAddressbook, KAlarm, KNotes, etc.)?
