/dev/dsp: Permission denied

I'm trying to give my regular user account full access to the sound card without giving every other user full access to the sound card. /dev/dsp is a link to /dev/dsp0 and the permissions on /dev/dsp0 are 660 /dev/dsp0 is owned by root. I added my user account to the group root in /etc/group using vi and then ran the command grpconv but I keep getting permission denied errors. So why isn't this working?

Yes, they are owned by root, and since you're a 'normal' user you're not root. Look at the group of /dev/dsp0 and add your users to that group (sys).

If you do not want to do so, create a special group for audio, chown the audio devices to that group and add your users to that group. That will work too, but is more work then the first solution.
