/dev/audio -cd play
I have a SB live! setup correctly, XMMS is working, /dev/dsp,sequencer and mixer are working, CD volume is raised to max, permissions on /dev/audio and /dev/audio1 are rwx for everyone. Still when i try to play CDs with any program (workbone, workman, kscd, gcd..), the program shows the cd is playing, but no sound.. I ch
ecked the audio cable from sound card to CD ROM and DVD ROM (There are two cables, one to CD ROM other to DVD), and they seem fine.
What else could be the problem?? If nothing is there to check could the problem be the conection between drives and sound card, although that seems to setup correctly...
Thanks for helop in advance!
Since everything is seemingly setup correctly, how are you going about trying to play the cds, namely if I recall, you do not mount audio cds. Otherwise, I may be stumped! Ooo that took alot didn't it?!

i know how to play cds! I dont mount them, just start up a cd player. Automounter is not running either. I'll try and see if CD sound is working in "that other OS". If not i guess it is a problem with the audio cable...
Thanks for help
This is a little late but if you ever get back here and you don't have your sound going yet try this, it worked for me and i had the same prob. like u described.
as root type
modprobe sound
modprobe emu10k1 (driver for SB Live)
well if you have SBlive it worth trying emu-tools , i don't remember if there are available in slack8, but in suse8 are, and you can enable the dsp chip of the soundcard in order to get control of the sound and not have it by default to maximum.
Also by running emu-config you get the Tremble & bass options in the sound menu , kmix.
in kmix menu also check that the CD menu in ON... there is a small light below the CDvolume controller that enables the output.. to CD..
I HOPE you have the CDROM connected to the SOUND CARD )
Its checked with the suse8 distro is working . . ..

Also, as you have 2 drives connected, obviously only one will be controlled by the "cd" volume level. the other is likely to be using "auxilary" so make sure that the auxilary level is also up.
