Desktop Trash icon

I'm using Gware Gnome 2.8.3 on Slackware current, and just noticed - after the latest current upgrade - that the desktop trash icon isn't showing anything in trash anymore. I can send something to the trash, but nothing is in there. However, when I go to my home folder and open .Trash, everything is there that I deleted - and I can delete it from there. It's just my desktop trash isn't working anymore.

Am I the only one with this problem?

it may be a very simple prob if the following works - otherwise .....

first send something to trash and then right click on
the icon - do you see the option enabled "Empty Trash"
or whatever the name is - to empty the trash bin.

if yes - go to the properties and change the icon to
whatever you wish to and you will find its working
fine.

but if you cant delete anything by right clicking on
the trash bin then its out of my knowledge.
sorry for that.

That's just the problem... right-clicking on the trash desktop icon gives me no options to delete anything. It's as if nothing at all has been sent to the trash. Yet, the .Trash folder in my user folder shows everything that has been sent to trash.

???

i a using gnome2.10.1 so
can u plz type in nautillus trash: instead of going /home.trash
may b in 2.6 .trash was there but 2.8 or 2.10 wont can u check ur trash points to where
just open it by double clicking what is the nautilus showing /home/.trash or trash:

so clean up by name may help ;)

Opening the Trash desktop icon in nautilus results in a "Location: trash:" .

I tried to right-click the desktop and "clean up by name" - with no effect.

I just don't know what happened. Just for grins, I upgraded to Gware 2.10.2... the trash icon started to work with 2.10.2... but I don't like 2.10 because you can't add application launchers - a big peeve of mine.

I re-installed Gware 2.8.3 and the Trash icon problem is back. Hmmmmm.......

Here is a solution to your problem. Hoary sets it by default in Nautilus to have the trash and other desktop icons hidden. This website explains why and how to fix it.

I fixed the same problem once in KDE. There should be a similar procedure for Gnome or any other desktop. It can be done all from the CLI. Log in as root, browse to the ~ of a user whose trash icon works, find the file that contains the settings for the trash icon. For KDE it's ~/Desktop/trash.desktop, find the Gnome equivalent. Copy that file overwriting the faulty one and then set ownership and permissions accordingly.
