um. indeed. i think you are speaking about memory being
accessed in a wrong location, which causes the crash?

While I can tell, that this subj can be not necessary on AMD. Falls in X all behind exception gtk-based appendices.
And still: SysRq !!!! for me ceases to work at this moment behind exception alt+SysRq+b. In other cases ! Fonts there is nothing. Qt-based appendices too. Observing for OOffice more and more suspicion fall on xft. Obviously all these toolkits ask something in system. That is not present that! But they I think that it is. Delirium Iron too at anything.
Unequivocally.
It is a pity, that badly I know the English language.
But as see, problems these not at all.
At all it, "extraneous" programs do not cost.!

Strange.
Logic.????????

hmm.. i just discovered that i can ping this machine
when the desktop freezes. but since i have no telnet
server running on this machine, i can not see how
i can do anything more than ping..

estaf - thank you for giving a long reply even though
you say your english is not good. i think you mean that
programs are looking for dependencies, but they can
not find them? like xft for various apps.

as for logic in linux problems - it is much more logical
than windows. usually the code can not be blamed,
but the user for forgetting to install something, or
not noticing or knowing something.

i will keep searching for solutions to this problem,
because there must be a solution.

hmm.. russian. i like a russian accent in a girl, but that
is a completely different story.

So how do these run levels work?

If I logout of a x windows session where I am returned to the graphical login screen... with the yellow flower background... speaking of the flower background... can you change that to another background image, if so how?

Anyhew... if I hit CTRL ALT F1-F5 it takes me to a blank screen with a flashing cursor... I can't do anything after that except hit CTRL ALT F6 or F7... F6 returns me to CLI... F7 returns me to the graphical login screen.

Is that how it is supposed to work or do I have a problem?

How do you exit out of xwindows so you get back to the cli... like you would be if you had id:3:initdefault: in /etc/inittab?

hm.. i wish you had posted this in a separate thread, since
what you ask has nothing to do with a desktop locking up
or crashing.

nonetheless:

change your gdm background by doing: actions -> run ->
gdm-setup. there, select a greeter from the graphical tab.
you can download more greeters at art.gnome.org

ctrl alt f1 through f5 should give you a login prompt on
the command prompt; if you see a blinking cursor, there
is something wrong; try pressing enter or ctrl+c; maybe
that will get you to the login prompt of that terminal.

i do not know how to exit gdm (gnome display manager),
unless you have set the runlevel to 3... well, there's an
ugly way i know of.. log out to gdm. then, press ctrl+
alt+f1, press ctrl+c to end the current x-server process,
and then you're at the command prompt.

good luck.

Thanks for the info... I wasn't sure what the graphical login screen was called nor was I aware that it was Gnome based...

Oh I posted here because of Proud's post above about CTRL ALT F1 - Fx.

Of course I could have quoted Proud's post in my question... maybe that would have helped.

Don't forget to man command if you are unsure of it's actions, especially while as root!
