The Desktop folder is used to display documents and apps with some window managers, the system creates it automatically so that if your using one of the Window Managers that supports icons it has a predefined location to look for them in.
As far as how how do you display icons on your desktop, it would help if we knew which window manager you were using

The Desktop folder contains the files/shortcuts located at your Desktop.
To save files to your Desktop, set the download location from the program you use to download to Desktop.

Kind regards

Unhappy KDE : Desktop

I'm using KDE. I placed many files in desktop folder but no use. Is drag and drop only the option to do so?

You need to set your desktop into "Folder View". Try to right-click the desktop and choose properties (something like that). Then try to find "Folder View" in one of the combo boxes.

That's the first time I do every time I clear my kde after an upgrade.
