deskjet 720c

anyone managed to make an hp deskjet 720c parallel printer to work?

well in default installation (before recompiling the kernel) the kernel finds the printer in the boot time and it is available as

>> lp

I do a

>> lpc
>> status

but the daemon in always not running..
I am trying to "up" or "start" lp but the printer is enabled, spooling is enabled but the deamon is not there...

any idea ? anyone manage to set a similar deskjet correctly ?

HP DeskJet720C

HP DeskJet 720C is bad printer for Linux

Reason:

PPA (Printing Performance Architecture) is a closed, proprietary protocol developed by Hewlett Packard for a short-lived series of DeskJet printers. In
essence, the PPA protocol moves the low-level processing of the data to the host computer rather than the printer. This allows for a low-cost (to
produce) printer with a small amount of memory and computing power. However, in practice the printer was often as expensive as more capable
printers and HP has since discontinued the use of PPA in favour of returning to PCL3e in their latest USB-based printers.

If you want to use your printer under Linux, you are much better off getting a PCL or Postscript printer.

Problem solving:

Have a look at:

f..k....

I just found that the apsfilter had a bug in slackware 8, and I tried to apply the fix, (I had to reconfigure the apsfilter, and delete old config files) but still nothing..

Also in the apsfilter support list my printer was not listed, I tried the one before mine and the one after mine.... so I bet you are right..

I have an old Deskjet 680C parallel port. It work fine with CUPS.
Besides that CUPS have a nice web based printer administrator.

Before that I tried with the official HP linux drivers:

http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/

The most recent version of this driver (ver 1.0.4) need a recent version of Ghostscript (ver 6.53) so i download, compiled and install all that, but only manage to print garbage. After some tries I give up and install CUPS.

ps. The HP linux drivers have released version 1.1. If you want to try....
