Dell Inspiron 6000

I'm just wondering if any of you could tell me where to go to see if this hardware will work with slackware 12.1. As i have just downloaded it and before i go messing things up would like to know how to get these things working. I have had a look in HCL and found a dell inspiron 6000 but it was 2005 and he used some other distro.

One of the things i want to get working straight away is my internet, so i can fix my other things. Would you be able to tell me what to type in or if it would work straight away would help alot.

2nd http://img120.imageshack.us/my.php?i...3445376xe5.jpg
3rd http://img179.imageshack.us/my.php?i...5722284xw0.jpg

I don't think you need any more info then that but if you do i will show you. If there is a better way of me finding out and how to get them to work i will do that if you dont want to just give me the information as i am willing to learn.

Thanks.

You can see tuxmobil.org to find out who's installed what on that machine.

The best way to find out is to list the support chips and see if they have a driver for your version of slack. Of course, since it worked with some other distro 3 years ago, it's pretty safe to bet it will run with slack.

I went there http://tuxmobil.org/dell.html
Only one that used slackware but when i clicked it it's in some different language.

Hahaha ... not a very useful link ... "no text on the site at the moment" ... DUH.

Looking at your screen captures, MOST things can be made to work (graphics, USB, NIC, wireless, etc). Bits I'm not familiar with:

Ricoh RL5C522 FireWire controller - can you get the PCI VendorID:ProductID for this thing?
Conexant modem - I suspect the modem can be made to work (if you care)

Looking at the other posts on tuxmobil, people weren't able to get their SD Card reader to work. However, the SD Card stack has been working pretty well for over half a year now, so you may even have some luck there, unless your particular device is not supported.

Bits to check specific to Slack:
Is the driver for the wired NIC (Broadcom 440X) included?
Is the driver for the IPW2200 included?

I know kernels from 2.6.18 to 2.6.21 had a working ipw2200 but you may have had to put in a different ieee802.11 stack, then the ieee802.11 stack changed in 2.6.22 and I have no idea what happened after that. You can have a look at the Slack kernel version, then look at the ipw2200 project site on Sourceforge to see if there are any notes for that kernel version.

Everything else I've seen (mostly Intel support chips) will all run out of the box.

I've had two dell laptops (Inspiron 5100 and Precision M6300) and Slackware has been no problem on either of them. In general, Dell uses some pretty generic parts that don't give Slackware any real trouble. You'll certainly have some tweaking and configuring to do, but Slackware will likely get a base system working out of the box. The only real exception is Deell's love for Broadcom chipsets in their Dell branded wireless cards.

I had Slackware 12.0 installed my Insp 6000. It was lost a while ago to a coffee 'accident'. The only thing that I had issues with was the wireless card but that wasn't too bad.

I have Slackware 12.1 on an Inspiron 6000; works just fine with out-of-the-box Slackware. The only thing I added was Robby Workman's WICD package for wireless when it's not at home (connected to a router) along with his OpenOffice.org package... well, I do add other stuff but those are for GIS and maps and don't count. If those are the kinds of things you're looking for, see http://rlworkman.net/pkgs.

Thanks you.

The installation of slackware 12.1 went smoothly for a Dell Inspiron 1525 and worked out of the box except for the Dell branded wireless. Just had to use ndiswrapper to get it going.
