default screen resolution on consoles

I just installed a new kernel and now when I reboot and login the screen resolution is larger than it was before. I tried other screen resolutions in lilo.conf but they still boot to the same 80 characters across the screen when it was something much higher (not sure exactly how many chars across it was). I even tried using the "ask" option and trying various other options but none look right.

How can I fix this?

I checked all the options listed on that page and re-compiled. It still has the default 80 chars accross by 25 lines.

I followed the directions Chris Abela suggested in the link http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Framebuffer
