Unhappy Dazed and confused...

Hi guys!
My first contact with Linux was made on Slackware. At that time being like an empty box I tried to fill up myself as much as I could with informations about this amazing stuff caled Linux. Unfortunatelly, I was put down quite easy by Slackware. I didn't give up and started with an easyer distro (RH). Things ran smoothelly, until I have realized that is time to face my old and scarry "enemy", Slackware.
Now, it didn't seem as dry as used to be for me before. But.... Still have problems with the basic structure of Slackware.
I'd better get to the point.
In RH, starting a network service wasn't hard at all. All what I hade to do, was /etc/rc.d/init.d/named start (0r stop). Same with iptables, or httpd. To start them automatically, was easy as well... a symlink between a service in init.d and rc3.d (.../rc3.d/So4iptables). In Slackware I don't have a clue how this things are working... Unfortunatelly, all those HOWTOs and guides are refering mostly to other distros, specially pointing to RH.
I've tried to find something more in depth about /etc/rc.d/ but not too much informations were found (Slackware Linux essentials).
My question is : Where an what should I read to lighten up my mind ?
How can I turn off and on all these network services? Where can I find the most complete documentation about Slackware?
Thank you for your patience of reading my whole message

good place to start would be:
http://www.slackware.com/config/
specifically for network setup you can read in:
http://www.slackware.com/config/network.php
they explain the neccessary utility program and also give you a walk through /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 and /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 you can also use pieces of those scripts (related to specific services you are interested in) as a reference to write your own scripts for enableing/disabling specific services. For restart most of the time "kill -HUP pid" is enough

I have always found that just reading the scripts themselves are simple enough. Start with /etc/iniitab and proceed into the /etc/rc.d directory with rc.S, then rc.M, etc. Seems fairly simple enough. All the other scripts are called from within. That is the beauty and simplicity of Slack. None of that SYSV junk that works only with three Tylenol.
