Custom XFCE build from Slackware repo

Hello,

I plan on remaking XFCE with a few customizations (removing orage, xfce4-mixer, and a few others). Before I do that, I just wanted to make sure that the script would work.

It's meant to be a minimal xfce with only xfce4-panel (and the dependencies) so that I could use compiz as a standalone window manager. Here is the old script (found on any slackware repo):

Code:

#!/bin/sh

What I intend to do is remove the lines the script searches for in:

Code:

for file in \
package-$PACKAGE_VERS.tar.$COMPRESSION

Maybe the version numbers before that, but I don't think that is necessary.

I have checked out xfce.org to see what dependencies I need simply for xfce4-panel to run by itself, but are there any precautions I should acknowledge before I attempt this project? This isn't my first time customizing a file that was installed on Slackware by default, but those were smaller, less complex packages.

Konphine 03-10-2012 07:56 PM

Bumping because it's been 24 hours and I just want to make sure I won't destroy anything.

the3dfxdude 03-10-2012 10:00 PM

I don't see why not just try it? I built xfce on a rhel4 system using the slackbuild, and I had to leave a few bigger things out.

Konphine 03-10-2012 10:01 PM

Alright, I guess I will. I'm just worried I might break my xfce somehow.

sahko 03-11-2012 03:42 PM

You may want to look here too if you want a newer xfce.

Must be getting close to time for this to hit -current.......

I doubt it. From what I've read, 4.8 is way too buggy for -current. Debian Sid or Fedora Rawhide, maybe.

sahko 03-12-2012 07:48 AM

If newer KDE gets into current, its inevitable that XFCE 4.8 will get into Slack along with it in order to get rid of all the needless dependencies like HAL etc.
The only way to improve the Slackware XFCE experience is to test Robby's packages and report bugs and/or patches.
