Only if you recompile KDE4 to install to /opt ... and then still you would have killed your $HOME configuration after you have run started both Desktops. Since they do incompatible writes to mostly the same configuration files.
Thank you ever so much on both accounts - creating Slackware Plasma 5 migration and for this "why didn't I think of that" quick response. My take is that it is theoretically possible but would require separate user accounts and specialty labels IOW a royal pita. Since I have enjoyed Plasma 5 on Live, I won't even bother trying to save v4 on my latest hard Current install. Ima just bite that bullet
Well I'm writing this from my new Plasma 5 DE and it works great with just one wrinkle. I lost about an hour because I had applied the Pure Alsa fix early in the Current install which of course caused initial failure. Actually that's one of my gripes about Pulseaudio. In the past if I had chosen OSS or esd whatever, I just wouldn't have sound until I set it so. With Pulse the whole damned DE fails to launch leaving me in a Black Screen and one in which Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is also not yet set to return me to runlevel 3.. just several more hoops to jump through to be able to get Pulse back, remove the reinstalled 4.14.3 stuff, and then re-upgrade the Phonon libraries, etc.
Despite that misstep I like Plasma5 as a hard install even better than I have on Live. Some of that is that I never figured out how to actually get proper nvidia drivers into the Live version. Now I can really do some deeper comparisons. Thanks Eric, it looks and runs really well.
