cups: test page prints fine but other programs don't
 

I know there has been a similar post butt I have a different problem, i think.
I have a HP Deskjet 930c and installed hpijs drivers as documented here
I've set up cups from localhost:631 and printed a test page and it worke fine, but when I want to print something from abiword or other programs nothing happens.

Also when i trie the lpr command console returns this:

first there is some error output from the lpr command and then it says to run 'checkpc -f' when I do that is says no entry for 'sd' or 'client' found

Try lpr-cups. I'm not an expertise at gnome but that is the right command if you're using cups.

I have an hp930c and use KDE and when you print for the first time you will have to select CUPS in the selection list at the bottom of the kprinter pop up window. All KDE aps will then default to CUPS.

For some aps like OpenOffice and Acroread, you have to nominate kprinter in the print setup of the application. Netscape seems to do without making this change but I think I had to do it in Mozilla.

In O.O. there is a special ap in the tO.O. menu, the name of which eludes me, and I'm at work on win2k. Once in that setup thingo you can load True Type Fonts or setup/change printer. Hit properties and enter kprinter instead of lpr or default or whatever is there. Acroread was the same but you just did it from the acroread print pop up window.

What will happen is after you hit print in say O.O. kprinter will then pop up and you can change settings or just print.

To make it simple for folks in my house I have my hp930c setup up twice in CUPS. Once configured for black and white (930-bw and once as colour (hp-colour) and hp-bw is default.

Similar problem, different error: When i use 'lpr' (which is symlinked to 'lpr-cups') absolutely nothing happens, no error messages, no nothing. The CUPS system says no new job was posted, and I am left hanging. The test page printed fine. My printer is Postscript native using 'raw' drivers. :scratch:

lpr-cups works great, weird cause when i tried lpr-cups yesterday it did'nt do anything.

It took me awhile to figure it out when I first moved to Slackware but here's the problem: Slackware's setup scripts will allow you to install LPR and CUPS at the same time. The spoolers use some of the same file names. They CANNOT be installed simultaneously.

What you need to do is use pkgtool to remove them both and then install one of them.

Actually, all you have to do is change the lp. lpq, lpr, lprm, and lpstat symlinks from pointing to *-lprng to *-cups. It worked on my system.

Using Debian and KDE 3.2.1, it seemed like everything was printing great except Open Office. OOo's spadmin utility was basically fruitless -- until I found the suggestion above to change the lpr command in spadmin to --> kprinter

Now Open Office prints like a charm! Thanks justwantin!

Remember to restart the cups daemon
Remember to make rc.cups executable so that the daemon starts on reboot

I had the same problem. IIRC, I fixed it with a swaret --reinstall cups or something of that sort. It was kinda weird.
