crontab problem

I'm trying to install a new crontab. The user is root and here is what i did:
vi cronfile
entered this into cronfile 00 23 * * * /pathtocronfile
crontab /root/cronfile
crontab -l (it listed the entry)
crontab -e (listed the entry)
I tried to save the file and it comes back with the following:
crontab: installing new crontab
"/tmp/crontab.24091:1: bad day of month
errors in crontab file cant install

Any suggestions?
