cron+vim bug

i've been long time convinced that crontab doesnt work in slackware 8.0. specifically, after editing root's crontab (crontab -e), a new crontab -e would not reflect my changes.

now i've installed 8.1 on my computer, and noticed that
if i have VISUAL=/bin/elvis or make /bin/vi point to /bin/elvis, crontab -e works fine.
if i have VISUAL=/bin/vim or make /bin/vi point to /bin/vim, crontab -e doesnt work.

any ideea what could happen here?

Oops, it might be, and there is no way I can check it right now ( I am at work, behind the RH system, damn the slacker here was taken away from me ), I'll check it out at home.
