cron on desktop

My box is a regular desktop and not running 24h a day. Therefore, most maintenance tasks like logrotate never run because they are scheduled at nighttime. I would like to replace cron by an alternative which catches up tasks which were scheduled when the machine was powered off.

I have read about anacron but it doesn't seem to be maintained anymore (last version is dated 2000). Is anybody using it on Slackware? If not, what do you use?

Why couldn't you just re-schedule the tasks so they weren't run in the middle of the night, but at such time of the day your pc is on?

Also I thought cron would run the jobs after bootup if the machine was shut down when it was supposed to run the jobs..seems like I've been wrong. Well, something new every day..

There is no specific time at which I could schedule the tasks. I think that catching up is the better method in the sense that the task is run as early as possible.

you could add
logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf
to your shutdown rc.6

Yes but that could run the tasks too often (e.g. when I reboot during the day).

You could investigate fcron.
I came across it here, but I not used it:
