Creating a DVD.

Hello!
How do you create a movie DVD in Slackware64-current? That is a DVD that you can play on any DVD player.

Thanks,

I can't answer for current as I'm using 12.2 but Devede has always done a good job for me.

Normally I use K3B, but the vertion that comes with Slack64 doesn't work.
What I do is install these packages.
ftp://slackware.mirrors.tds.net/pub/...a/kde3-compat/
Then use “pkgtool” to remove the original.
In pkgtool the one you want to keep is “k3b for kde3 and get rid of the other one.
Anything you make copies of will go to
/tmp/kde-”your user name”.

I would like to record movie and photo dvds (originals or not) that can be played with standard dvd players. The DVDs then need to have that VBo format when they are burnt. DeVeDe is a good alternative but I am not sure if it works with Slackware64-Current.

Under win there are many programs. One of those programs is VSO convert X to DVD which converts almost any movie file into DVD format and burns it. But that is a proprietary software for win. That's why I am trying to find a good solution for Slackware.

Is DeVeDe the only package for that under Linux?

Thanks again,

Hi,

As stated by Slackass, the -current k3b was broken. The alternative was to roll back to the 12.2 version.

Closest thing to ConverXtoDVD is DeVeDe.

DVDStyler will author, encode, and make slide shows. http://dvdstyler.de/

KMedia Factory, http://aryhma.oy.cx/damu/software/km...ory/index.html and ToVid are other options as well. http://tovid.wikia.com/wiki/Tovid_Wiki

These programs are not native Slackware programs. You should go to www.slackbuilds.org to grab the dependencies. ffmpeg and some different codecs (Xvid, x264, a52dec, dvdauthor, mjpegtools). DVDStyler also needs wxGTK and wxSVG. wxSVG can be downloaded from the DVDStyler site.

@ disturbed1

I'm running slack 12.0 and DVDStyler 1.6.1.2

I have a libdc1394_control error when I installed dvdstyler and I'm not sure where to get this for slackware. I've installed all prerequisites for dvdstyler that I'm aware of and I've had to fix a couple lib files so far too.

thanks for any help.

DVDStyler doesn't have anything to do with firewire capture, not sure where that error comes from. If you installed a pre-compiled package from somewhere else - then it's something they had on their system when they made the package.

What lib files did you have to fix?

Grab the newer version of DVDStyler - much improved.
dvdauthor
mjpegtools (now optional)
ffmpeg
wxGTK
wxSVG
DVDStyler

Everything but the last two are at www.slackbuilds.org.

wxSVG and DVDStyler are straight forward to compile.
./autogen.sh

./configure \
--prefix=/usr \
--sysconfdir=/etc \
--localstatedir=/var \
--enable-static=no \
--enable-shared=yes

Since you're on 12.0 no need for --libdir=/usr/lib${LIBDIRSUFFIX}

I've used dvd::rip with some success. It has a lot of options, so you might want to try the simpler acidrip instead. Both of these apps don't allow you to preserve dvd menus, so you might want to try k9copy (similar to DVDShrink in Windows). It works pretty well and the interface is fairly simple, although it didn't work for all my DVDs.

You might find some good apps here:

It was a package that came from trusted slackware site in the 12.0 multimedia folder(http://repository.slacky.eu/slackware-12.0/multimedia/). I ran dvdstyler from command line (since it wouldnt come up from menu, i use xfce) and noticed the lib errors.

There were a couple but from memory not completely sure now. One was libx264 i think, libdc1394 and another one which I think I fixed when I did load the apps you list belowor their upgraded versions.

I tried loading 1.7 but came up with different lib file missing. I'm at work now so can't recall the name.

@ vik

couldn't get k9copy to shrink .vob files or convert .avi file.

I'm trying to find something different than DeVeDe to convert .avi files to dvd. Mainly for the larger ones because DeVeDe has done good on every other conversion. So I thought I'd try DVDStyler.

Thanks

libx264 and libdc1394 would be from installing a precompiled ffmpeg which was built against those libraries. libdc1394_control is another firewire related library. Are you sure it was from OSUOSL and on the Slackware DVD, and not from slacky.eu?

You are better off just compiling your own packages, that way they are built for your system against your installed libraries. www.slackbuilds.org has everything but wxSVG and DVDStyler.

--edit--
You edited your post
I'd go back to slacky.eu, and make sure you have all of the same packages installed they recomend for each. I believe they use something like requiredbuilder to list the deps. Or you can ldd /usr/bin/$PROGRAM and see if something is missing.

Thanks for your help disturbed1 but after taking a closer look at DVD styler it doesn't look as though it can take an .AVI file and convert it to burn on to DVD (i.e. Audio_TS folder , Video_TS folder). Sorry to have wasted your time.

Thanks,
dvdauthor works for me. A SlackBuild script is available on SlackBuilds.org.

As this is a command-line tool, some learning is required. Here are some tutorials:

DVDAuthor documentation

Some thoughts on DVD authoring

Although ffmepg is not a dependency for building dvdauthor, it is strongly suggested to install it to create the video file with the appropriate format (SlackBuild script is here)

Sure it does, you just have too old of a version. The encoding options weren't added until after the version you have. At least take a visit to www.dvdstyler.de and read the features on the front page. Encoding support was added with version 1.7.0, you're using 1.6.2. As I recommended earlier, you need to upgrade. Current version is 1.7.4RC2.
