Crazy kernel issue with 2.4 to 2.6 update

I have a 80GB Sata HD. I upgraded my kernel from the standard 2.4 kernel with slack 11 to the 2.6.13.xx kernel also on the CD.
The 2.4 kernel sees my SATA as /dev/hda.

Now I'm running into an interesting problem.. I can't get lilo to use /dev/sda because the 2.4 kernel doesn't see it as sda it sees it as hda. If I try to boot to the 2.6 kernel it tries to use the /dev/hda because that's how lilo is configured and kernel panics.

So I boot back into 2.4 and when I try to change the lilo configs to

boot=/dev/sda
root=/dev/sda1

I get an error that says: No such device or address

So now I can't update my lilo.conf so the 2.6 kernel boots correctly! Anyone know how to get around this?

Thanks

geez

sorry - I'm an idiot.

for the record, you don't change the boot option, just the root option.

in other words..
cat lilo.conf

boot=/dev/hda
root=/dev/sda1

:-)

Well done you got it sorted, just remember that and offer your advice to others who may not be so quick to pick up on the problem.

Make sure you change the boot option to sda and run /sbin/lilo again after to boot the 2.6 kernel - otherwise, you'll be fussing sooner or later when you forget about this
