Crashing
I've been using Slackware 9.0 for almost a week now and it's been crashing lots :/. Sometimes it crashes while booting, other times when I've just done 'startx' and just while I'm in X browsing or doing something else. I'm not sure if it's my disk or Slack, or what it is (although I didn't have this problem when I used Red Hat 8).
Any help appreciated, thanx. |
Can you give us some more information on when the problem occurs? What kind of tasks are you running when they've crashed. In order to diagnose this as more than just a random problem, we need to find a commmon thread in the crashes.
Until I have more information I'd just tell you to reinstall it maybe? I really have no clue.:study: |
I think it's just a random thing. Sometimes it happens when I browse, sometimes when my machine is idle :/.

Does it "crash" or simply turn itself off? With the heatwave we have been having its possible your machine is overheating and simply turning itself off. Slackware is not known for crashing...
|
It doesn't turn itself off, it hangs.. gets stuck, etc. I thought it could be the heat also, but then I'd have the problem in Windows as well, wouldn't I?
|
Yes you would indeed. Does it crash/hang on the console? Or is it just X? If X locks up you can always kill the X server with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, then look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log for any error messages. Also, look in /var/log/messages for any error messages. If you aren't experiencing the same behaviour in windows, then I would advise re-installing. I've had Slackware on my machine for well over a year now and its not crashed once.

It doesn't seem to crash in the console (though I hardly use the console anyway). There are no error messages in my XFree86 log, but there are a few warnings though:
(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/". Entry deleted from font path. (Run 'mkfontdir' on "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"). (WW) VESA(0): config file vrefresh range 40-90Hz not within DDC vrefresh range 50-130Hz I don't really see anything error like in /var/log/messages either. 3 times in a row, it has crashed on boot. It gets to 'Setting system time from the hardware clock (localtime).' and then hangs :/. I had probs installing Slack, kept crashing and screwing up, but oh well :(. |
Sorry I don't know whats going on there for sure.

I.. can't.. remember :(. I think there was an option for using UTC and something else; I picked the other (not 100% certain). Kernel 2.4.20 if it makes a difference.
|
In the hardware clock setup, make sure you don't select UTC. Use the default "No", then choose your time zone. That may help. If you can get it to boot, you can do it from the console as root with
timeconfig Good luck! munkeh |
Yeah, that's what I selected on install. I just ran timeconfig and did it again though. Booted without problems, so hope it sticks.

Still having probs :/. I think I might try a reinstall.
