I believe the version of gnome in 10.1 is gnome 2.6. It is no longer supported so you cannot upgrade to later versions of gnome from slackware's site or mirrors.
So, since gnome is now no longer a part of slackware, you must turn to outside parties to provide gnome installations for you. The ones cited in those threads are the one most commonly used: dropline, freerock gnome, gware, and linuce's builds. You will need to visit each of those sites to determine how they install gnome, but usually there is a script or something to download that then in turn downloads all the appropriate files and installs them for you, overwriting your gnome 2.6 that came with 10.1.
I myself use freerock gnome, but have tried all the others except for linuce. I like gware a lot too, and dropline is probably the slickest but lots of folks don't like the fact that dropline overwrites a lot of other slackware packages, like xorg.
HTH.
