Controlling the fan in Slackware w/ Linux 2.6 or Linux 2.4
 

No one seemed to reply to the thread labeled the Toshiba A65's Random Shutdown thread, but I'll generalize more.

Does ACPI for some reason not work in Linux 2.6.x? Or is it just Pat's Linux 2.6.7 kernel from /testing directory. My fan doesn't turn on until after the laptop has overheated and shutdown after the first boot. On second boot, it stays on, which is what I like. I don't mind a loud fan, but I do mind a random shutting down laptop.

I looked the BIOS for the A65 and didn't find a fan control meaning I'll have do some tricks in the kernel themselves. Using Pat's generic kernel 2.6.7, at lilo, I added the options append="apm=off acpi=on"

But this doesn't seem to solve the problem. And I don't feel like compiling a kernel now. Although I'm guessing Pat's "bareacpi.i" and "vmlinuz-ide-2.4.26" are the same kernel for the 2.4 series. I haven't checked 2.4 yet about this screwy power management. I know XP turns on the fan because it has great ACPI management. I just Slackware had the same.

Also, I tried toshiba utilities. The software doesn't work on Linux 2.6! It's too old. I haven't tried a compile under Linux 2.4, but sources tell me that the laptop is too new and it won't work. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know about the A65 but I have Slack working just fine on an A60 ACPI and all.

I am running 2.4.28 compiled for the laptop and have modified the rc.modules script to load all of the ACPI modules on boot.

keep trying ! I would start by going back to the 2.4 kernel and getting that working before trying to go bleeding edge.

I can't post the actual output right now (I'm on a different system) but I can tell you that when I recompiled I included ACPI support and set the components to compile as modules I then modified rc.modules to load all of the ACPI modules on boot.

Is it possible to compile all the components into the kernel? Do you suggest it? I'm pretty sure Pat's 2.6.7-generic slackware package doesn't include all this. Thanks

I don't know about the 2.6.7 kernel but I know that pat doesn't include ACPI in the 2.4 series.

I have always compiled ACPI as modules so I don't know how they will work if compiled in but they definately work as modules.

I have an old .config file for my A60 on kernel 2.4.27 if you want a copy ?

Does /proc/acpi exist? If it doesn't, ACPI is entirely broken. I have all the ACPI stuff compiled into my kernel (2.4).

If it's there, check the info file in there to see if it likes your fan controller or not.
