Connect to the internet through a winXP machine
I just got my Netgear wireless card working with the madwifi drivers, and now I have a statically assigned IP and can ping other machines on my LAN. However, I still have no internet access. All the other machines on my network are windows machines and connect through a winXP machine. This machine is connected to a Netgear router, which is connected to a ADSL modem. How can I connect to the internet from the router or this machine?

Well, I don't have a wireless LAN or an XP machine, but since no one else is replying... Try to run "netconfig" as root. And have your hostname, domain name, IP address, subnet mask, gateway IP address, etc. available. At least its a start.

I assume the windows XP machine is the gateway and you have told slackware this during the installation, ie its ip address and entered the relevant DNS information.
If all that is done then all you have to do is increase the maximum MTU on the windows XP gateway to about 1500, this can be done using Dr TCP available from here:
DrTCP

All I know is (if you are using winXP internet sharing):
1) Try with DHCP instead of static ip. As I recall windows needs this.
2) Make sure the option to let other computers control your internet acces is turned off.
That's as far as it goes for me.

Thanks all for replying
I tried to configure dhcp, however I don't exactly know how. I also don't know how to configure dns. Is there any tutorial I could read? I've been searching the internet for quite a while now, and have not seen anything.
I've used netconfig, however as far as I can tell that only configures ethernet cards like eth0. I need to configure ath0, an atheros-based wireless card.

Just found out there is a forum devoted to wireless networking on this site:
LinuxQuestions.org > Forums > Linux - Networking > Linux - Wireless Networking.
Maybe they can help you better there. They also have a simple HOWTO-thread meant for 2.4.x kernels. I don't know if you already have the 2.6 kernel, but even then you might be able to adapt it for your setup.
I gathered some quick quotes from people who very probably know more about this than I do:
By meldar:
>Are you connected to an essid? Type iwlist scanning to scan for an
>essid, and iwconfig eth1 essid "name_of_essid" to connect to that
>essid.
>
>Use dhcpcd ath0 to get an ip from a dhcp-server.
By beyer42:
>recheck /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0
>
>and make sure you have the following parameters set:
>
>GATEWAY=192.168.0.1
>NETMASK=255.255.255.0
>BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
Hope that helped.

I used the instructions here to set up my network card, as this was the only slackware-specific tutorial on setting up a wireless card I could find. I do not have a /etc/sysconfig directory, as I think sysconfig is a program, which I do not have installed. I have tried dhcpcd ath0, however it does not work. I can post the error message if needed, however it will require a reboot (writing from windows, dual boot system). I have also tried route add gw 192.168.0.1 (router) to set up my router as the default gateway, however that also does not work (Do I need to set my windows PC as the default gateway?). I'll try the wireless networking forum, but I just think this is a configuration problem with slackware, something I am overlooking.
Thanks for all the help so far!
