confirm client on network

I've used a function with ping and grep in a script before to check and see if a given machine was up on my lan but I'm wondering if there is a simple way.

Something like areyouthere -m 192.168.1.27

I haven't found anything yet with google but I'm not quite sure what keywords to use.

TIA

You could create something easily:
Code:
#!/bin/bash

if [ $1 ];then
 ping -c1 $1 > /dev/null 2>&1
 if [ $? -eq 0 ];then
  echo Yes
 else
  echo No
 fi
else
 echo Usage: areyouthere host
fi

Thanks david_ross.

A nice and neater than mine last time around.

I thought there might be something out there ready made, but scripting's fun on a rainy day and the more functions the merrier :^)
