MP3 playback is stuttering

I recently did a clean install of Slackware which promptly updated to "current" using Swaret. I am having trouble getting my CD Rom drive to play audio CDs. Presently, KDE will allow me to "play" a CD only as root even though (to my knowledge) my fstab should allow for any user to mount CDs or play audio CDs. Unfortunately, when root "plays" the CD there is NO sound even though I have all my volume levels up in alsamixer and kmixer.

fstab
Code:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
I am using a Toshiba 1625CDT and the sound card is detected by Alsa as a CS4281. My KDE system sounds play however they are choppy. I have absolutely NO midi playback. Can someone please help me. I haven't been able to find help through searching the forums.

Thanks!

**EDIT**
Well, it turned out that Alsamixer had the CD player muted which is why I had no sound. So the sound card operation is fine.

i fixed it by doing this...i first edited /etc/fstab to show this

Quote:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user,ro 0 0
changing /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdc...

then i did
Quote:
chmod 666 /dev/hdc
and that gave me the permissions to use the cdrom as a user...

Midi sound is another ball of wax.

I would advise searching this forum and 'hardware' for 'midi+playback'.

BTW, I'll blow my horn as I blow thru B'ham heading south on 65....Everyday for the next week...lol
