configuring screen blanking

After playing with the settings in xorg.conf and adding the line 'Option "DPMS"' to the monitor section, the monitor will now blank and go into powersave mode when I want, but that's only in X. In any of the virtual terminals, the screen will only blank after a few minutes. Is there a way to set it up so that the monitor will go into standby after a certain amount of time whenever I'm not in X?

This should help:

man setterm

look for powerdown option. oh, you can add to .bash_login or profile in /etc. At least that worked for me.

There may be a bug in setterm. It apparently doesn't work, only blanking the screen, but not going into powersaving mode.
Another of the 10.0 bugs. I've decided to go back to 9.1, I'm so tired of bugs.
.1 ia the magic # in Slackware, but 8.1 was the best and the trend doesn't seem to be changing direction...
Hopefully 10.1 will fix some of the most glaring defects!

If you don't have apm or acpi in the kernel, it won't power the monitor off. That is not a bug. You just need to put the option in the kernel. I use apm, because it works for me, some use acpi because their rig likes it. Try one, if it works for you, use it. If it don't, try the other.

You also may want to check the bootloader. Sometimes they disable the option there as well.
